So, if you were looking for a nice new pipe - a real good smoker. You went wild with TAD a week or two earlier and don't want to spend a fortune, you are looking for that real deal out there. Let's talk options here... What are some of the best buys out there for just simply flippin' good pipes that won't set you back an arm and a leg? Probably best to leave Dunhill and Castellos out of this one...

There are artisans out there that can make pipes for under $120.

Then there's always my favorite pipes to smoke.

Estate Dunhills can be found for under $150 if you look hard enough.

A few sites like SPC even have a layaway option.

I'd go for a sub 50 USD Rossi or a Peterson System Standard pipe (starting at 60 USD).
Then there's also the Nörding Compass pipes (basically briar cobs) if you want something more utilitarian looking for 40- 55 USD.

All above are in my experience great smokers.

Lots of good suggestions already, but it's really hard to say anything definitive without a more specific price point. But I will say Morgans Bones pipes are a solid bet: not the prettiest, fanciest, but smokes superbly.

$40-$70ish

and they're bare/naked so if you want to play around a bit, it's a nice place to dip the toe:

I'd be looking for Ascorti, Caminetto, Savinelli and Brebbia on eBay as well as some other Italian made pipes if the price is right. eBay doesn't seem to be offering too many bargains at the moment but come July, I suspect you'll be able to get some great smoking (and looking) pipes for $100 or less. I'd much, much rather buy a $200 estate pipe for $90 than buy a new pipe for $90 assuming it is in good condition. And you can often do that on eBay if you're patient and know what to look for.

To mention a few that have not already been named on this thread: Tsuge lower-priced pipes pop up on SP and other retail sites, but you have to keep watching because they sell very fast; various French brands make excellent pipes at a range of prices -- Chacom, BC, and Genod for examples; PC has Kaywoodie from time to time, but they sell very fast, and I especially like the Saxon series; Iwan Ries house pipes are now made by Genod, FYI; Nording pipes in all price ranges are well made and durable. There are many others like Big Ben, Dr. Grabow especially the Royalton series; and so on. If you stick with known names, you will probably do okay; otherwise you play the lottery, could be junk or a great smoker, but you take the chance.
