Hello fellow pipe smokers :)
I just joined the forum to gather information on the art of pipe smoking and what revolves around it.
So I decided to buy a Peterson System for my small collection. And I’m puzzled about the pipe I got. Due to strict regulations and the unavailability of legal tobacco stores in Iran, certainty about buying products is hard to obtain.
I would appreciate if you’d tell me wether this pipe of mine, especially its mouthpiece, matches well with what a ‘real’ pete is like.

Cheers,
Maritime Piper

Looks similar to my system standard. I’m no expert, but I don’t see anything amiss. Someone else will likely have better judgment than I.

The mouthpiece looks like it is a P-Lip, which is a special Peterson invention. Sone like them, others do not. If you want a normal bit from Peterson, they sell “fishtail” bits which are like normal pipes.

Thanks for the reply ^_^
It is indeed a plip. Nothing wrong with that. What has got me confused is the other end of the mouthpiece: the tenon part. I searched for similarities and found a photo as a means to comparison:

The second picture looks wrong to me. I don't know, maybe they're making Peterson stems like that now. The one's I've had always looked like your first picture.

I have a newer system standard, and it looks like the bottom picture, with that little extra smaller bit of tenon. Maybe this is a change made recently, and yours is older. I’m sure some Peterson person will come along who knows about it.

I was lost as well. Yet, I just read some interesting fact that Peterson also makes system pipes with regular filter stems, as it seems to be more in demand around europe.
hmmm. There it is then. :))

More importantly, does it fit well and smoke well?

Yes, mine are older. I haven't kept up with the latest greatest Peterson changes.

I guess I'm a bit of a purist, but to me, it's not a true Peterson System pipe without a p-lip. It's an essential part of the whole. However, Peterson is in the business of selling pipes and the reality is that the p-lip doesn't appeal to everyone. So yes, they do make fishtail versions, too.

On the face of it, I'd assume it is authentic since knock-offs of a high volume product like Petersons would seem to be a low-profit effort, especially in the face of a very large estate (used pipe) market. If someone is going to forge a pipe, I'd look for it in the line of historical carvers. Knock-offs have to be done with the complicity of the customers who just want to look good to those in their circle, as with women's handbags, or surreptitiously at very high prices where the customer is the mark. I don't think Pete pipes would work in either direction. Just my fly-by assessment.

Exactly. It’s missing the tenon extension for some reason. Like it was cut off?

They knock off everything there... from the cheapest to most expensive item.
