Hello guys and ladies.
My name is Pablo, I'm a 23 years old (and counting) chemical engineer from Brasil and i have been always somewhat fascinated about pipe smoking, specially churchwarden pipes (even before Gandalf made them cool). My grandfather smoked cigarettes made with corn straw and tobbacco by himself (i don't know how you call those in english), for hours of meditation looking at his cattle and fields and everything he had. He died of natural causes at an age of 93.
I'm saying that because here were i live, smoking in general isn't very well looked upon. But i'm pretty sure that like everything, smoking in moderation can do wonders for one's body and mind. If you eat a lot, exercise a lot or drive really fast you are taking risks just like smoking a lot, right? Right.
Anyway, for some time now i'm missing something that i don't know what it is. I just can't relax properly by myself like I used to do before college. You know, get lost in thought and shut down a bit. So i'm trying to find ways to turn off and just run myself through my mind. I always liked aquariums too, and i constructed one by myself, and it did work for a couple of years, but now it is turning into just another responsability and that is even more frustrating. It doesn't "trap" me like it used to. The same thing with chimarrão, which is a local beverage here from south america, made with the infusion of hot water and ilex paraguariensis leaves. It's somewhat like pipe smoking, has a lots of types and blends of mate herb (the I. paraguariensis), you do for relaxation and to inject drugs in your system. In this case, caffein. But with all the stress i'm on lately, it is just doing wonders to destroy my stomach. Have i mentioned that I'm taking citalopram because of stress? Yes, it is a medication for people with suicidal tendencies. I'm not too fond of taking giant complex organic molecules artifically synthetized into my body.
So I again started reading about pipe smoking, and seeing how some people find it to be just their thing. I gotta tell you, i hate cigarettes but i somewhat enjoyed the smell of my grandfather's cigarettes (which lots of people always defined as stinky), and i'm pretty sure that the evil thing about smoking cigarettes is the amount of pesticides they throw on that tobbacco and get burned afterwards. I know about that, my godmother had a plantation of tobbacco. And i like fire a lot. Anyway, I'm willing to give it a try.
So, what information can you give to an aspiring begginer and non-smoker yet like me that i haven't yet read on internet begginer and tobbacco choosing guides and such? Like first pipe (I'm pretty sure i'm gonna get a Corncob one because of the relatively low price), first tobbaccos and such? Keep in mind that this isn't a hobby very popular in Brasil, so my resources may be very limited from what i've searched. And what questions can you ask me to help me?
Sorry for my bad english guys.
Thanks in advance.

hey Pablo - welcome to the addiction. Your English is just fine, not problem there. I had a similar experience to what you are describing and feel that pipe smoking has really enhanced my life. I am extremely healthy, eat very well, exercise a ton..... and love my pipe. Give it a try, start small and see what you like. Ask any and all questions here and you'll get a lot of very nice and knowledgeable people here. Take care.

Hi and welcome, Pablo! I find that smoking a pipe is very relaxing and gives me time to contemplate many things about life; I think it would really benefit you that way, too. Like Roth said, contact Rich at 4noggins and see what you can work out with him regarding international shipping.
Not many people really know the difference between smoking cigarettes and pipes (at least those who do neither one), so it is difficult for people to understand why anyone would want to smoke a pipe. The best advice I can give you is to just do it. Once those around you can see the benefits you will have from taking time to relax and recoup, the less antagonistic they will become (hopefully). Regardless, finding something that's helps you relax is more important than trying to live up to others' ideologies. Be deferential around them, but do what you need to do in order to handle the stress.

I firmly believe that pipe smoking has added years to my life.
As I type this, I am sitting on the front porch. I am smoking a glorious bowl, sipping a nice IPA, and looking out at the horses and goats grazing in the front field. I am completely oblivious to budgets, deadlines, and tomorrow's list of chores.

Hello guys, thanks for all the input. And a special thanks to those who read that whole post. So, I'm definetely going to contact 4noggins.com, asking some guidance. It looks like I'm starting with a MM corncob. So, as for the tobbacco, any inputs guys?
Something tells me I won't be too fond of anything aromatic or that tastes like vanilla, but that's just a feeling and I'm willing to give it a try with an open mind, of course. It will be sometime before i get my things here to Brasil, and i hope it will be worth it.
Thanks a lot guys
Pablo

Welcome aboard. I would definitely go to 4noggins.com and buy some pipes and tobacco. One thing no one tells you about pipe smokers is that the more you smoke a pipe, the larger your dick grows, it is a medical fact.

Don't worry, I'll make sure i get all the tools necessary to boost my hobby haha. Speaking of that, what do yiu guys think about lighters? I always loved zippos and even owned some but judginh fron what i've read matches are the best.
As from my size, the ladies always said I'm pretty lucky in that area, but here in Brasil we always say that between an extra inch and ANYTHING else any guy will choose an extra inch lol.

Welcome to the Club pablo, Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob pipes would be an excellent choice. Also as everone here has said Rich at 4noggins is the best in the business.

I will throw out a couple of suggestions for starter tobaccos that I think would be a great place to start.

Carter Hall

Coyote Classic

Chipman Hill

Any of the Frog Morton blends

all of the above are available at 4Noggins

Welcome, Pablo!
You'll find several threads in here about Zippos, pro and con. I prefer matches myself, but they aren't great when I'm smoking outdoors - so I keep a Zippo pipe lighter for outdoor smoking, as it's the best thing I've found for windy conditions.
As for tobaccos, you'll be in good hands at 4Noggins - but my advice, as a new smoker myself, is to sample the major tobacco types - Burleys, Virginias, Latakia blends, Oriental blends, Virginia/Perique blends, and Cavendish (technically a curing process rather than 'type', but it's distinctive). Once you've decided whether you like general types (I'm fond of Latakias, split on Burleys, and still figuring out Virginias), experiment further with the multitude of blends within those broader categories.
And above all, enjoy yourself. That's what this is all about.

Great advice Phred and 05venturer, thanks a lot.
I tried contacting Rich last thursday, but i think something went wrong with the e-mailing. I sent another one today, let's see how long it takes for him to answer. I must say, I'm getting pretty anxious about getting a pipe. And i realy hope the smoke will carry any anxiety to heaven.
Just yesterday i was listening to some Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and Legião Urbana (Urban Legion, the most poetic and brilliant brazilian band ever) and i thought to myself "Man.. I don't know how, but this moment ASKS for a pipe..." I just don't know why, lol.

By the way, does anyone know if Rich is having any problems? It's been 5 days since my first contact, and 1 from the second. If this is how long it takes to get any answer, I'll get a pipe by new years eve.
And another thing, why is pipesmagazine.com down so much?

pablo, welcome to pipe smoking and Forums. I suggest you get both unfiltered and filtered Missouri Meerschaum

corn cob pipes, so you can see the difference. European pipe smokers seem to prefer filtered pipes, U.S. smokers

unfiltered. I'm not sure about the Brazilian pipe smokers. You might order one of the bag of ten corn cob

seconds. That would provide you with a complete rotation. Best luck, and keep us posted.

Welcome from another newbie!
Im not sure on the legality of certain smoking items in Brazil, but I know of an item that recently has been gaining legal status in the US that just might be the perfect answer for you.
I also dont know the rules on this forum so that is as far as I can go right now. But yeah its used as a medication far and wide and been around much longer than any of the pills.
