I'm interested in the history of Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake and Gawith and Hoggarth's Best Brown Flake #2.
If anyone has any insights or links?
Also, Which do you Prefer and Why?
As of now, I'm going with # 2 I find it fuller in flavor and less bitey.

They're not close to being the same. I strongly prefer BBF and don't find it bites in the least. While the Lakeland is faint in the #2, it's still more than I care for. To each they're own however.
My only experience with BBF was a night of whiskey and huffing so I chalk it up to user error 😂😂😂 But I need to smoke them back to back to give a definitive opinion…

What makes BBF one of the best smokes out there is it's lack of any added scents or essences. No dark fired smokiness. No perique spice. Nothing fruity. Nothing floral. No desert toppings. Just a pressed cake of high grade virginia baked until brown. Less is more.
