The pipes I have slowly purchased off of Ebay have been at bargain prices. But does that also mean they are basket pipes? I have one pipe that I consider a basket pipe, a Sweet Honey Canadian that also happens to be a great smoker. But it begs the question : what makes a pipe a basket pipe and are most cheaply bought estate pipes considered basket pipes? Or are basket pipes those made cheaply in China? Or wherever?

There are name brand basket pipes.

I think of them as the pipes that B&M pipe shops would put out for under $100 at the register for beginners to pick up a few to make their first rotation. They can be of any make or model. But, some B&Ms will have special ones made, like The Briary that has their own logos put on them. But, even then, they may have asked Savinelli, Nording, or Briarworks to make them for them.

what makes a pipe a basket pipe
You walk into a well-known tobacconist (in a bygone day), like David P. Ehrlich's in Boston/Cambridge (RIP) or LJPeretti's, also Boston... and you are greeted with the reassuring aroma of Latakia.
Also, in the front of the store is a basket of pipes. Maybe several dozen in there. And priced to go.
These are basket pipes; house pipes. Fine and perfectly smokeable pipes of various shapes and sizes, but wilh their imperfections.
So, like the pipe smoker rummaging through the basket: flawed in some way.

The term "basket pipe" gets used too widely to describe any pipe at a reasonable price, even name brand good ones like Dr. Grabow, Kaywoodie, and some Savenelli. The term, properly used, designates only pipes in a pipe shop sold out of a basket. These can include the lowest grade briars and other woods with soft plastic stems that chew through in a few months or weeks of use, but also any pipes the shop feels have been around too long, hence some quite nice ones like Savenelli unfinished pipes, and lower priced pipes from brand names. Basket pipe doesn't give a precise evaluation of their quality, only that they have been put on discount. Traditionally, if you knew your pipes and combed through the basket pipe basket on a pipe shop visit, every few visits you'd find a really good buy in a standard quality pipe, and sometimes a sweet deal on a better than standard pipe, depending on how good your eye is.
Okay, now to the present. Basket pipe is a term used to often designate pipes that are of notably poor quality that even beginners should avoid. They are poorly drilled, of cheap materials, and not designed to make a pipe smoker, a friend or a customer out of the purchaser. Buyer beware. The good old pipe shops still have baskets with real basket pipes, and some terrific deals for experienced pipe smokers and newbies who have done their homework. Just shop with your head, not your heart and your hopes.

"Basket Pipes - What Are They And How Are They Identified?"
What are they? Often no-name pipes of questionable quality with regard to briar, stem, construction, and finishing.
th

How are they identified? Well, they typically reside in a basket on the counter of your local tobacconist's shop. Frequently they are accompanied by a sign advertising a low price.

Basket pipes would be along the lines of a mass produced machine made pipe. Usually the B&M can order them from a company and they come ten to a sleeve. (Much like MM Corn Cobs). They are usually standard shapes such as bent, billiard, etc. A store can usually get them for a pretty good price and then sell them for 50 to 60 bucks a pop.

I recently bought a brand new lovely Parker of London pipe (shown on the forum), beautifully shaped, perfectly drilled and with stunning birdseye grain for about £40. Forum member John (jpmcwjr) told me he bought a similar Parker pipe in London sold as a 'basket pipe'.
The term, to me at least simply means a pipe in the lower price bracket and has nothing to do with the quality of the pipe as a smoker. That said, there are good basket pipes and there are bad basket pipes. The bad ones tend to have no maker's mark. Either way, they are priced to sell and generally make good smokers.
That is my understanding of the term, others may differ.
Regards,
Jay.

None of my basket pipes are stamped made in Italy, though that doesn't mean they weren't. All my basket pipes came out of true baskets, two Parkers a year ago, and about four from 50 years ago. And they were all found in, uh, a basket!
But I also see the term being used to denote an inexpensive pipe, name or no-name.
