I got fifteen Barling's from the late David Cueno's sister today. The first batch are six from family era. Later, I'll post the corporate era pipes.

What I would like to know is if anyone can give approximate dates for them, and which would be Algerian briar or another kind. I would greatly appreciate any help anybody can give me on this.

Barling’s Make Ye Olde Wood Special Made in England squat dublin. I guess it's a squat dublin. There's no number stamp.

15 Barlings in a job lot
RESPECT bdw
Thanks, but it's a little bitter sweet. The Barlings, among other pipes and a big lot of tobacco, came from the late David Cuneo's collection. David wanted me to have some pipes and tobacco, and his sister sent them to me. David and I were very close friends for thirteen years, and owning his pipes will be special, but also sad because he's not here anymore. I got fifty of his pipes, but I'd rather have David alive and smoking them.

David obviously wanted them to be used by someone who would cherish them.
A lovely gift.
And a lasting momento of your friendship.

Ah, cruel irony - Dave was the King of hallmarks!
I still have Dave's cell number saved in my phone. We were of like minds. I was always going to connect with him at NYC pipe club meeting or the NY show, but it never worked out (he really didn't like to travel into the city).
He is missed. He bought a few Sasieni's from me, I wonder what happened to them.

David had several serious health problems which is why he didn't travel. I did get three Sasienis from his sister, but I know he had more than that.

Wow! That is a wonderful gift! David sure had a good eye.

Going from first pipe posted and down:
1. Squat Dublin - Post war - 1947 to 1962 - check the underside of the stem near where it joins to the shank to see f there's either a REG'd number or a Barling DESIGN stamp, which will further refine the dating. If there's a REG'd number then the pipe dates from 1947 to 1951. A Barling DESIGN stamp indicates a dating from 1951 to 1960. From what little I can see of the Logo stamp it looks like a '40's thry mid '50's stamp.

2. EL Billiard - Post War - 1947 thru 1962. Given the logo stamp I'd say more likely '47 thru '54ish. Again, check for a stamping on the bottom side of the stem for either a REG'd or DESIGN stamp. Condition looks really good! Nice birdseye! If it weren't for the TVF stamp I'd be tempted to date it earlier because of the stem shape at the bite zone, but the TVF stamp wasn't used until after the War.

3. Straight grain bulldog - Barling straight grains never have model numbers because they weren't considered part of their normal product line. Again, very nice condition, not a lot of buffing damage. Post war 1947 - 1962. Logo stamp is consistent with '47 thru '54ish. Look for stem stamp.

4. EXEL 301 Special - This is one of Barling's very classic, very popular shapes. Post war - 47 thru 62. Again, very nice condition with crisp nomenclature and clean lines. Looks to have been spared from buffer destruction. Looks for stem stamp to further refine the dating. Logo stamp is consistent with '47 thru '54ish.

5. 238 EXEL pot - Barling was famous for its pots. They are fabulous smoking machines. 1947 thru 1962, logo suggests 1940's. Stem is a little dull, may be starting to oxidize. A little toothpaste and a waxing should address that. Nomenclature is crisp. No evidence of buffing damage.

6. 2104 billiard Special - 1962 and ONLY 1962. In 1962 Barling initiated a change to their sizing nomenclature by dropping the SS thru EXEXEL size nomenclature and incorporating it into the model number. They dropped the use of a 1 at the head of model number and indicated chamber size using 2 through 6 at the head of the model number. This is also around the time that they dropped Nichols as their US distributor and the US numbering system they had created for him. Barling continued to use its traditional block lettered, arched, BARLING'S over MAKE until November of 1962 when they issued a second catalog with the new logo stamp in addition to the numbering change. All of this dates this pipe to 1962.
"Special" was a grading that Barling used for pipes with slightly better graining than the regular run.

7. Barling Billiard - This is a mystery pipe. This logo looks like the 1930 era "small stamp". There's a 6 where I've never seen one, and nothing else. Was it a gift pipe? Was it an experiment? Was it a special order? Was it a dealer's special request? Who knows? I sure don't.
Check for stem stamps.

8. Corporate Era Quaint - Late 1960's - early 1970's - For a period of time, Imperial decided to try a mass produced Quaint, replacing the one-of-a-kind Quaints made during the family era. †here are 6 designs that I've seen so far and there may be more. This is design 5 and multiple copies were made of it.

9. Billiard 5585 - Corporate Era - 1963 - 1979 - Not enough info to give a relatively close timeframe, The logo stamp looks correct for 1963, but the stem doesn't look like a Barling stem, so it might be an early '70's pipe made by Oppenheimer, or the stem might not be original to the pipe. Are there any stampings on the other side of the shank? How is the slot shaped?

10. Barling 5579 Lumberman - Corporate Era - mid to late 1960's. Around 1964-5 Barling moved the TVF stamp to the shank side opposite to the logo stamp. Someone's pet monkey went to work on the stem where it meets the shank. My guess is that the stem is not original and that a defenseless stem from another Barling got put into service.

11. Barling 4945 - Corporate Era - mid to late 1960's - early 1970's. Around 1964-5 Barling moved the TVF stamp to the shank side opposite to the logo stamp. Pipe might be Oppenheimer or Charatan.

12. Barling 4389 - Corporate Era - early 1970's - likely made by Charatan for Baring

13. Barling 5017 - Corporate Era - hallmarked to 1966 - note that the shank TVF stamp has been moved to the opposite side of the logo stamp. Condition is very good.

14. Barling Guinea Grain 6179 Billiard - 1963 or later. Looks like a Barling factory product, but only one side shown. Any other stamps?

15. Barling 6279 King - King refers to the size of the bowl. Mid to late '60's. TVF stamp on the opposite side of the shank from the Logo stamp, so no earlier than 1964.

Hope that this is helpful

This is more than I had hoped for, but I knew if anybody could help, you'd be the one. Thanks a ton, Jesse.

As for your questions:
1) None of the family era Barlings had a reg or design stamp. I used a bright light and tried three different magnifying glasses hoping to find any sign of those stamps with no luck.

2) Your question about the stem for #9 on the list. There are no stampings on the other side. Here's two photos of the stem that may help you.
5585_Stem_Top.jpg
5585_Stem_Slot.jpg

3) I agree that the stem for the Lumberman (pipe #10) is a replacement.

4) The Guinea Grain (Pipe #14) has no stampings on the other side.

How many of the family era pipes would you say were made with Algerian briar? I know they used Grecian in the 1950s, too.

Let me know what you think.

Base on the slot, this was probably made by Barling. I guess they had more stem shapes that I'm used to seeing, so made sometime between the mid to late 60's. In the later pipes made after the factories closed and the production was outsourced you can see where they took a molded stem and tried to round out the sides of the slot. And mostly they didn't even do that.

14. Barling Guinea Grain 6179 Billiard - 1963 or later. Looks like a Barling factory product, but only one side shown. Any other stamps?
I'll stick with the dating. Nothing I can see suggests anything different.

I think that all of your Family Era pipes are Algerian based on the style of the nomenclature. Those Barling's Make logo stamps are pretty standard for post war '40's stamps, which continued into the mid fifties. Barling lost its Algerian operations during the War for Independence in 1954, and afterward, bought their briar from Otto Kahn(?), IIRC, who was the biggest merchant at that time. But Barling would have had stocks to last years from their Algerian operations. Around the mid 50's the logo stamp changed, with a much higher arched Barling's over Make.

Happy to be of service!

Congratulations on the wonderful gift that David left you. Memories continue and this is a truly wonderful way to support them.
