I have been enjoying the latest posts about the "Loft find Barling set", the updated Barling page, and am eagerly awaiting the Nichols info to come. Another thing I would love to see would be an index of known Barling shapes with their numbers for the post-war era. Jessie's 1914 catalogue reproduction details that period, and I've found the 1962 catalogue online with its illustrated shapes and numbers, but a listing of known "Nichols numbers" (my area of interest) would be most welcome. And I understand this would be an ongoing and very long undertaking, but it would be great to have a project like the ones I've seen (apparently now abandoned) for GBD and Comoy. I list below the shapes that I am aware of.

493 saddle chimney EXEL
505 taper brandy EXEL
71A taper billiard EXEL

below are all EXEXEL:

442 saddle billiard
292 taper billiard
265 lovat
266 taper apple
543 taper billiard
251 taper billiard
52 taper billiard
274 saddle apple
276 lumberman
450 oval-shanked billiard
240 saddle billiard
279 long oval-shanked billiard
LF Canadian
LLF Extra-long Canadian
1852 Lumberman
789 taper billiard/liverpool
309 pencil-shank billiard

Please add to or correct.

I’m sure Jesse will respond in depth, but as I recall there are well over a hundred Nichols shape numbers, each correlated with the UK numbers before the transition and the new numbers implemented in 1962.

Yes, 40 years ago Bob Noble opined that the Barling shape number list was interminable. I do recall that Jesse (correct spelling this time) mentioned a list or catalogue he had that "translated" the "pre-transition" numbers to the equivalent "post-transition" numbers, but never heard or saw any more. I just thought that forum members here could add to my meager list the way people supplemented the Hagleys' GBD shape list years ago (see Pipedia references). Don't mean to add to Jesse's work load unless he wants to.

I do have a scanned copy of that list and will upload it. It’s not a complete list, just what was still in the line at the time. I doubt that a “complete” list exists, given that Barling had hundreds of models that came and went over the years.
