I have been using balsa filters in my MMs lately and was wondering if I should be pulling them out between smokes to dry out or if I can leave them in until they are done?

+1 Roth, on Hobby Lobby. Although I don't personally use filters, my uncle does. I found the balsa sticks Roth mentioned at hobby lobby, already in the triangular shape, for cheap! I told my uncle about them and he hasn't bought filters ever since!

On one of the radio show episode Brian interviewed a guy from Savinelli and he said what he does is flip the filter around after the smoke and that helps it last another bowl or two.

I think that calling them a "filter" is a stretch. They mostly seem to dry out the smoke a bit by absorbing the water vapor from the smoke as it passes around it. I will switch between two of these per pipe, every other smoke, giving one longer to fully dry out between smokes.
And as Rothnh says
Pulling them out, rinsing them under hot water, and letting the dry works best
Doing it this way has mine lasting for a couple of weeks, with each filter getting about five to seven smokes each. Most of the time I can tell that I need to refresh them when they start to split and disintegrate.
I will check into using the craft store balsas when my stash runs out. That sounds like a great idea. I also wonder if using bamboo would work. I have a field of that stuff.
