Hi guys, now I have my jars and I have filled a few I'm slightly concerned about something.
When new and still empty, the lids once placed on the jar with the sealing ring gave a 'click clack' sound when pressed and this I was told was normal.
I have since (cold) filled three 1 litre jars with 500g each of rubbed out flake and noticed tonight that when pressed nothing happens so I assume I have negative pressure in those jars.
Is this what I should expect?
Regards,
Jay.

Jay, the internal pressure of the jars can be effected by several factors, not the least of which is the barometric pressure. Other factors include temperature (if the temp drops after you seal them, the internal pressure will drop) and the bioactivity of the contents of the jar.

Totally normal, while the pressures and temps have some effect, it seems to me the biggest effect is bioactivity. With empty jars I'll notice positive or negative pressures when I open them, but with tobacco in them, left for a few days, they always have negative pressure.

For a while this past Spring, I rode around with a few cases of Ball jars in my car. When the car warmed up, the jar lids would start to ping. Sometimes, an entire case would ping in the space of 30 seconds.

Could not the pressure be neutral? Or are the lids depressed?
In any event, Jay, I've never had a problem with Ball/Mason jars, though I've not paid much attention to the lids' state of tumescence.

Thanks for settling my mind chaps, I was getting a little worried for a moment. I suspect over time they might develop positive pressure as the contents ferment and release gas?
"though I've not paid much attention to the lids' state of tumescence."
John, so glad that you are not being diversivolent regards my jar's potential dissilience.
Regards,
Jay.

Most of my jars have a negative pressure. But I did post about positive internal pressure once: http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/♪♬♫-pop-goes-the-baccy-♪♬♫

Wow. Rare to find two words that I've never even seen before, much less know their meaning..... Well done!
Diversivolent, “desiring strife or differences,” and concatenation, defined as a “ ...... Oxford English Dictionary defines ambition, as used in the early seventeenth ...

  • dissilience. The word dissilience means the quality of certain seeds to burst out from their pods. Botanists might talk about the dissilience of a ripe pea plant. The noun dissilience is rare — you're most likely to find it in a botany textbook, describing a ripe, bursting seed pod.
Well, sometimes my seeds want to burst out, thank the Lord.
