I got a brand new pipe and I think I may have smoked it to hot before a cake a formed on it. Now when ever I smoke it there is a sour taste no matter what tobacco I smoke. I think I may have burned the brier. What if anything can I do to fix or repair the pipe or is it lost?

I can't get an image to attached but i can say that it smells like a burnt wood. The shank is clean. There are a couple of names on the side here they are. Due Depose Bruyere Si or St (not sure) Claude. Hope that helps.

A burn is highly unlikely, as they are rare. Clean it, let it rest a couple of days, and try again.

Some new pipes do that, might be some kind of finish from the factory, try some sandpaper (400 grit or finer) and clean out the bowl and wipe it with alcohol, let dry and try again

Spiven- welcome to the forum!
Once your photos are on a photo hosting site (such as Imgur.com; Photobucket; Dropbox, etc.), select the full image, then Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) and choose copy image location. Now paste that URL (the full web address) into the box that pops up under IMG in the compose reply window of the thread in which you want the photo to show.

i tried pagan's suggestion and it cleaned up pretty well. But when i look in the bowl now it kind of looks like there are a bunch of cracks in the bowl almost like how a wood looks after it has been burned. I am going to let it dry and then see how it smokes hopefully the problem has been solved. I will let you guys know. Thanks again for the help.

Wow! How many times you smoked that guy? The rim char indicates you may be overheating the pipe and consequently the bowl, both briar and tobacco.
You need to get some light into the bowl for me to see much of anything. Right now, it just looks like uneven cake, but that's a guess.

If the walls of your pipe have cracked you might want to apply a thin coating of pipe mud to the walls and let that thoroughly dry out before lighting up again. That will help to protect the wood from further damage, provided you smoke it slowly to build up a little more cake. Smoking slowly, with small sips of the smoke, will give you better flavor. You want to simmer the tobacco.
Smoking too fast and hot results in a burned flavor. The pipe should never get hot. Don't worry about the pipe going out, just relight and take it slowly.

SLOW DOWN GUY! Pipe smoking is all about being relaxed, not getting relaxed.

Agree with all above. Pipe mud for extra protection and slow go. Seems like what you have are spider cracks caused by excessive heat.
