So one thing you might be able to tell from my profile picture is I spend a lot of time in the woods backpacking. I'm actually heading out next weekend, for about 40 miles or so in the PA backcountry. (definitely somewhere relatively untraveled so I can keep to social distancing guidelines). I think I'm going to bring my MM Ozark Hardwood, it is rather light, and a ziplock of tobacco to smoke.

So any thoughts for the perfect blend to smoke outdoors on the trail? Something woodsy and smoky? I want an idea for something that is equally at home at an overlook on a (hopefully not too) windy ridgeline or sitting around the campfire.

HIt me up with your best ideas!

I’m also a pretty serious backpacker, and I usually take a blend I want to get to know, but which isn’t completely untried.

I’m actually heading out to link up a couple colorado 14ers in about two weeks, and I’m planning to take a tin of GL Pease Montgomery. It’s a blend I’ve smoked enough to know I like, but which I don’t entirely “get” yet.

Yes, I would not bring a new tobacco on a back country hike. What If you don't like it?
Bring something you like, and know well.
The hardwood is a good choice, as for the ruggedness of it. It will take some good abuse. However on the other end, I would be afraid it would get hot.

Unlike my compatriots, I would bring a tobacco I enjoy and if you want to try a new one, bring it along too. Just do not be stuck with a new smoke as your only blend on the chance you will not like it...or even despise. Personally, I take 5-6 small 1/2 oz tins just to cover the bases. My mood changes from minute to minute. But I do know I enjoy strong Latakia blends while hiking. They simply fit the experience.

I'm more of just a hiker (so weight isn't a real concern) than a backpacker although my daughter just turned 1 so maybe in a few more years I'll be able to go backpacking with her.

Either hiking/camping/backpacking has a duration so I would gauge how much I would smoke over the duration so I would know how much to take. I would also want more than 1 blend.

For a weekend of just hanging around camp with either fishing or a few short hikes I would want a half to one ounce of three or maybe four blends. Probably around 2 oz total or a little more. One aromatic, one VaPer, one with Latakia, and maybe a fourth wildcard.

My preference for being out in the woods is always a good Burley blend, like Carter Hall (I usually prefer Chatham Manor) or a straightforward Oriental like Presbyterian or Skiff mixture. I like a familiar, easy going smoke when I have been trekking, as I find it augments the relaxation of a campsite after a long day.

Something you know and like. You go out trail hiking to do with less, so making do with one or two baggies of blend shouldn't be much of a sacrifice. What you know and like will be satisfying. If it were me, I might choose C&D Bayou Night and/or Tuggle Hall, SWR Aromatic, or PC Russ O. Log Cabin. But so many would be pleasing. As someone said, the setting will make the blend superb.

Up to personal preference, like most things in this hobby. But I would bring a bright Virgina, for the mornings and mid days and a Latakia blend for the camp fire evenings. To me Latakia smells like camp fire in the woods. Just closing my eyes and smelling the Latakia in the can of Billy Budd I just opened brings me back to a camp fire by a lake deep in the quiet woods hearing the loon birds cry echo.

If you are a drinking man bring some Ardbeg (preferably Uigeadail) whiskey, for a smokey trifecta.

Bring your preferred tobacco, personally it would be a Latakia mixture or some strong Virginia, Va/Bur plug/rope.

My choice would be Stokkebye Cube Cut. It’s cheap, readily available, smokes great in a cob, not mild, not strong, cube cut so it’ll smoke well in a breeze. Just dry it thoroughly before you go.

oh yeah, and it’s a very tasty smoke
