After a bit of a hiatus with our trip to Italy followed by couple of weeks working on my wine cellar, It's good to be back in the shop making pipes again! This shape is a new one for me- I think I'll do some more of them...Came in at 5.75" long & 59 grams with a 7/8" bowl diameter...

@trailboss
Were you able to glean any techniques or tips while visiting the pipe makers overseas?
...quite a few- It's really helpful seeing how different guys set up their shops and what specialty tooling they use for different operations. A surprising difference is that the American carvers tend to use fancier equipment like digital drive controls on sanding and shaping equipment and heavier metal lathes, where the Euro carvers are working with decades old equipment in many cases. I think the American carvers are more innovative than a lot of the 3rd and 4th generation European carvers (notable exceptions being the incredible work from the high end guys like Eltang, Rasmussen, etc...)

@ejames These guys sell some drive controllers that a lot of guys use- You should be able to buy a controller and motor for maybe $250- The great thing is you can vary the speed from 600 for waxing to 3450 for shaping....AC Drive Control

Zack,
I am TOTALLY in the market for an artisan bulldog that does NOT have the cap line cut into it. I know this is more of a Rhodey but love the bowl/cap size. I went to your website but didn't see this pipe there. Are bulldogs/rhodeys new to you as a design?

Just wanted to bump this thread to say......THIS PIPE IS MINE!!!!!!
I got this right before Christmas and just love the way it looks. I only have about 4 bowls through it but its a nice open draw and this pipe just loves Stonehaven (I think Greta performed a Stonehaven blessing upon it before it shipped) and Astley's 44.
Thanks for a great pipe Zack.

You are lucky and unlucky all at the same time Zack. Although it appears that you have a pretty good stash of Stonehaven to keep her happy :)
