I bought a brigham voyageur a few days ago. I've only smoked 2 bowls out of it and it already smells awful, like it's rusty and gone bad. I didn't treat it any differently than my other brigham, and I even tried scrubbing it out with everclear but it still smells very bad. Has anyone had this happen to a new pipe before, and does anyone have any suggestions on how to possibly fix it?

Here's brigham pipes page. It says to rest the pipe 24-48 hours between smokes. Perhaps you've smoked too many bowls to fast? Are you smoking the same blend or different blends? I don't smoke a particular pipe more than once a day, so it could be a moisture buildup. Breaking in a pipe takes a bit of patience, my only new pipe I've ever bought was a peterson and it had this coating on the inside of the bowl that looked like varnish and it kind of impacted the taste at first. I've seen people do a salt and alcohol treatment to brand new dunhills to remove this.

This might seem like a simple question, but you are removing the filter to allow it to dry between smokes right? The filter will start to smell if it is not removed and dried inbetween smokes.

Try cleaning out the mortise with an alcohol dipped q-tip. My new Brigham had a ton of stain in there.

Someone else was complaining about the stain on their new Brigham wiping off after it was warmed up

by smoking it. That and this smelly problem sound like problems in finishing the pipes. Didn't Brigham

recently relocate their shop to Italy? Maybe they haven't fully trained their pipe makers and worked out

quality control at the new location. I know there are strong financial factors impelling pipe makers to

move, mostly to Italy, but I still wish they would resist the urge. Italy is a fine pipe making country with

many skilled workers, but just moving the operations beyond their original national borders changes the

whole work force chemistry. I think Stanwell has gotten up to its Danish standards, but maybe Brigham

hasn't "gotten back to Canadian levels."

I'm with Rockford, clean out the mortise. I had the same smell problem with my pipe and the alcohol dipped q-tip came out a colour of stain. I found the first few bowls through were a strange smell and each and every time I would clean it out with a q-tip and eventually the stain was worked/smoked out of the mortise.
