I just received 2 pipes from 2 different sales, 1 had the stem super glued to the shank. The second one had the bowl super glued to the stem. The 1st was a kaywoodie Coral, the other was a Viking. All they had were excuses, "how were we supposed to know you weren't using it for a costume"? "We get items from people all the time and we sell them eBay".

So they want me to believe they've been under a rock all this time and have no clue how a pipe works or what you do with it. I can understand the Viking. I mean some people may just think its attached some strange way with a hidden screw or magic. But when I got it and could see it more clearly I could see the clue. The Kaywoodie was done in such a way that you cant see the glue.

I'm getting a refund, but I saved them and if the put that back up I'm contacting eBay to let them know they're con artists. I mean if you've ever heard of Sherlock Holmes, or Watched TV or a movie, it'd be hard to miss the pipe.

If someone was going to sell me something I knew nothing about, I would go online, 1 to see it's value, 2 to see how it works so I'll know if this one's functional.

Seriously, give me a break. There I feel a little better now.

Well, not every seller on eBay is a pipe smoker or even remotely knowledgeable about pipes.

It’s a buyer beware situation. I’ve learned to ask the seller direct questions and extra photographic proof on certain items.

There is a pipe right now on eBay that is listed as “restored and ready to smoke”. The bit of the stem is broken off, not a clean break either.

You have to make sure you know everything about it you and be aware.

At least you are getting a refund.

Years ago I purchase two pipes represented as Dunhills. Poor photography and misleading statements were involved. The seller refused the return. eBay stepped in and refunded my money. The seller then made a person threat and questioned my lineage.

Here’s how I resolved it.... I emailed him his home address, personal information including his social security number, his employers name and how long he’d been there.

I followed it up with a comment that if he ever contacted me again, I’d personally show up on his door step to discuss the matter.

You have to be careful and pay attention on eBay.

Pamnbillcollectibles are is a volume antique (come might say junk) dealer. He/she/they have over 10K items listed. Their pipes are all buy-it-now with free shipping, most for $12 OBO, a few as much as $50, and others cheaper. Some are sold explicitly as-is. I don't know if I'd have high expectations buying from such a seller. Could be a good source for hidden gems but definitely should not be surprised if as as-is item turns out to be junk.

I wouldn't automatically conclude that they're con artists if they don't specialize in pipes. A lot of these sellers by pallets full of random stuff and post it and probably aren't knowledgeable about everything they sell. Theyre basically just junk flippers.

People have found some stunning bargains on Ebay, the $25 Castello and so forth. But you have to factor in the time (time is money) and wasted energy and fouled mood, and raw disappointment that it costs when you get ripped off and disappointed. The whole pipe thing is supposed to be an enjoyment and pleasure, so when it is exactly the opposite, it defeats the purpose. Or, you have to practice the whole endeavor as if it is a sport, and a gamble, and win or lose, and that's all okay.

Who could call this stuff junk?

They've got a genuine Italian pipe with antlers and eyeballs for only $20 bucks!

And what could possibly top that you ask?

11 Armour Hot Dogs / Captain Crunch PIRATE TREASURE Coins Cereal Premium Plastic - for only $45 bucks!

This is the important part right here.

Thanks for letting us know about these sellers though ?

Yes but they did have as is. But it was misrepresented. I've sold on eBay several times, every time before shipping I made sure it wasn't broke or missing anything. I've bought several things where the seller contacted me to inform me they noticed damage not in the picture or they had lost it, they offered a refund or partial refund. The other person just gave me a refund. But things like this are expected. But not actual misrepresenting the item.

It never crossed my mind to ask if it was functional. Lesson learned. But they made the comment about using it as part of a costume. So they knew it wasn't functional and "neglected" to to inform buyers.

I usually ask for pictures of the mortice and inside the bowl. But I noticed a crack in the shank near the stem. I figured I'd like to try to gain the experience of repairing it. Also there was a picture of the bowl.

After inspection I decided it would most likely destroy the pipe and stem if I tried to separate them.then I shined a light into the bowl and it shined through the crack and where the stem and shank were glued.

I also thought about trying to repair the 2nd one but the glue damaged the chrome. I thought I could sand and paint it, but I was mad and decided I didn't need them. I have plenty to keep me busy for awhile.

Thanks

If I buy a pipe and it’s not what is advertised, it goes back. The one shining grace of eBay.

All of the lessons I’ve learned on eBay are hard won. I’ve made mistakes and sellers have made mistakes.

Buyer beware, with a purchase satisfaction guarantee. Lol

Exactly. You’re always protected as a buyer on eBay even when they don’t accept returns. “No returns” means “forced returns” lol

It was the “forced return” that started the nonsense I related above.

The seller, using the eBay email system, told me if I returned the pipes, he’d shit in the box and mail it back to me.

Right after that he started physically threatening me, well you see how I responded.

The other important point of this is that eBay banned him from selling on their platform.
