Why I have never tried this before I have no idea. My newest love is Astley's no. 44 Dark Flake. I have been a fan of Astley's 109 for years, it is a great mild all day flake that does not bite. I was perusing tobacco reviews the other day looking for flakes that I had not tried and came across this. It is blended by Kohlhase, Kopp and Co. KG which happens to blend another of my favorites Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake. At first I thought maybe these were the same blend just in a different tin, but I researched a lot of reviews and determined it wasn't the case.
The flakes are dark but with a bit of lighter tobacco running through it. It smells sweet and honey like and after letting it dry for a good hour and a half, I loaded it up. This stuff just tastes great,it is nice and sweet, there is some spice as well and has more nicotine than the Wessex and every bit as good. This stuff burns so cool and has absolutely no bite. I ordered 5 tins just having a feeling I was going to love it, and now I will be ordering lots more. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good Virginia Flake.

44 is a real sleeper. Rich, almost dark, sweet Virginia goodness. It has changed a bit since K&K took over the blending, but it remains a readily available, wonderful blend.

I was doing some googling on this blend and stumbled upon this old review by Harris. Everyone who likes VA flakes should try this one - it is out of stock quite a bit, but I see smokingpipes currently has it in stock: http://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/by-maker/astleys/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=255

Hehe......just scored 5 tins (i hope i dont get THAT email) I hope I like it, though I feel it will be some time before I crack a tin and find out. Im sure its a safe purchase as its been mentioned on recent posts by members whose oppinions I trust and have let me to quite a few tobaccos that I enjoy and am now stocking.

A great pipe smoking friend told me about Astleys #44 some years back. "Good Virginia," he said. I've kept it around since.
