From the time I was a little child, It has been well known that I have a very strong bronchial asthma. I had to lie about it to get into the Army. Proudly,I served my time but the asthma persisted. Now, at nearly 40, I am stronger than ever and can run my 2 miles just as fast as when I was 19.
I am pleased to report that pipe-smoking has had no effect. Keep in mind that I am a slender build, but I can bench over 300lbs and my warm-up is 140lb.
As for cardio, I can still run a rolling hills course at under 10min or less for 2 miles a mile and even do a sprint in the end, no need for a rescue inhaler.
I can honestly also say that id smoking a pipe caused a problem, it would have been over, sine I car abour my health,
The only thing that hurts my asthma is th damned pollution in our area

I can sympathise. I'm a lifelong asthma sufferer myself and I am happy the pipe hasnt affected my breathing. Though when I had my respiratory infection a few months back I had to stop smoking for the duration of it. Only other thing I can smoke without risking my breathing is Djarum blacks.

I just have to try a little harder now that I don't have youth on my side. When I was about 28 I found myself in piss-poor shape and decided, I was going to just go out and do a 2 mile run like I used to. Ended up walking with a cane for 2 months (Which is how I ended up making walking sticks. I was too cheap to buy one).
I started out hobbling 1/2 mile with the cane, then without, then jogging the 1/2 mile and so forth... A year later I was running 6 miles a day, swimming and weight training. I used my local community college to get some good exercise coaching and I never stopped after that.
I'm not as nuts as all that now, but I still love to work out and the asthma always makes it a battle. I just decided long ago that one weakness wasn't going to define who I am or what I can do.
Thanks for all the kind words. They are an inspiration!

Thanks so much for telling your story. I also am really glad your health has improved and the running routine you got back to is inspiring. Its great that the asthma doesn't affect it. I'm sure the calming, pleasure, choosing what pipe and what tobacco - ie the whole hobby - is helpful to your health. Run on!

Believe it or not, the exercize that seems never to bother my asthma is swimming, particularly if I'm swimming in the ocean. My wife introduced me to the Cayman Islands and when we go she has to sit on the shore with binoculars and wait for me to surface.
Next trip I'm going to bring my favorite bowl and a Navy blend to smoke while I sit on the beach, drinking Blackbeard Rum!

i find smoking a pipe helps me breath, takes my mind off it and makes me focus on breathing without thinking about the attack
