I recently acquired this Ashton Brindle XXX Made in England and I am having trouble finding the date the pipe was made. I have looked at all the sites to find the date and none mention this a mark like this one on the pipe I have. After the "D" in England there is what looks or appears to be an apostrophe, nothing else. I seek knowledge from the Wise ones on here as to what the date could be. Thank you very much. The pipe has a beautiful ring blast on it.DSC03112.JPG

The Ashton outfit is headed by a former Dunhill employee who perceived he could do some premium pipes without requiring the new-pipe buyer to take out a loan. I'm always shopping them, and someday I might take advantage of a windfall, though I already have a large stable of pipes. I'm smoking a recently made Kaywoodie billiard right now that cost $43, and I'm not looking for a better smoking pipe, I will admit. But Ashtons are handsome and I prefer them to Dunhill/White Spot, with a little more ease in design and finish, and without the status-seeker prices. Ferndown is also made by a former Dunhill employee, Les Wood, and I have one of those, an excellent smoker, courtesy of a Forums member. And thank you again for that!

That says it perfectly. They always felt like Dunhill minus the pretense. I think my next pipe might be an Ashton.

There’s a story out there that pipes destined for the US market in the mid 90’s were intentionally not stamped with a date code, as consumers would see it and wonder why a particular pipe had sat around for several years...

Or it was just never stamped with date code because someone overlooked it...

That makes sense, @craig61a , not for sure what the intent was with the asterisk thing that is stamped on this one. Oh well will just sell it like this and if they ask for a date tell them I don't know and use your story, that makes perfect sense.
