Had a good bowl of CH just now. Typically, towards the end of the bowl, I'll tamp to see if the smoke is done or not. It sure felt like I had a bit left. The top of the ashes wasn't near the shank. So, dry out the stem, tamp again and did a taste draw. Mouthful of ashes. Looked in the bowl and sure enough, chunk of the ashes were gone near the draft. And looked like there were good deal of ashes in there. I should have poke it with something.

Usually I can feel with the tamper when I get close to the bottom of the bowl. If there is a smokeable quantity of tobacco left, there will be a slight springiness felt. If the tamper is just tamping down solidly, probably the bowl is over. If you get too persistent and try to puff on fine ashes, what you get are ashes.

I normally don't inhale ashes, but today it really felt like there was tobacco left. Don't mind leaving last bit, but dang it, I got bamboozled!

Happens to all of us at one time or another. I've been smoking a pipe for 54 yrs and it will happen to me from time to time. Usually when it happens, I'm not paying attention. I generally use the poker on my pipe tool to gauge the depth of the tobacco.
