I'm still pursuing the question as to whether leaving burned ashes in the pipe bowl cools or heats up the smoke. I'm inclined to think that leaving them in helps to cool, especially when smoking outdoors (which is 95% of my smoking).
What are your thoughts?

I honestly have no idea but I always dump ash before re lighting because the flavor is that much better. I never have a problem keeping a pipe smoking cool so it is all about the flavor for me. When I am down to the last 1/4 of my bowl, the flavors get better and better because there is no ash in the way.

Idk the science but I can tell you what I do, I tip the bowl over about half way through the smoke *when it goes out* and whatever ash falls out is all I get rid of. Of course I'm not perfect and sometimes a bad pack means I have to fiddle in more depth. I also have to say what Roth said sounds right, but I have no ideal lol
