Short time smoker. I've noticed that if I tap out the ash half way through a bowl the second half smokes better. Is that usual to do?

Never tried it. Thought itd help keep things cool keeping the ash. Maybe I'll try.
I almost always have to do at least one ash dump either half way or 3/4 of the way through. Seems to always help staying lit and I sometimes see the draw improve as well.
I only do it when I'm finished with the pipe. I pack the chamber very lightly and only use the weight of the tamper to tamp with no extra pressure.
I'm still figuring out how to pack right every time.
Sometimes its easier to relight the pipe, if I dump the ashes.
I would rarely empty ash prior to finishing the bowl. Can't remember the last time I did. I see no reason for doing so.
Smoking techniques are almost as unique as fingerprints. There can be guidelines but none apply to everyone. Once you find your own way of what works, run with it.?
When I first started I packed tighter and did an ash dump or two per bowl. Wasn’t working that well for me. I started drying my tobacco more, packing lighter and the ash dump isn’t necessary anymore.
Should my ash be buried under an ash tree at midnight during a full moon, or is it sufficient to empty it out at a crossroads? Inquiring minds...

I prefer to pack the tobacco tight, but keep the air flow open. I prefer the flavor that way. Usually empty the ash around 2/3 bowl along with running pipe cleaner through.
Or you could just stick it up your ash and be done with it...
Everyone is different. I never dump ash, I find with my tamping technique the ash helps keep the ember going.
