One thing I love about shows like Chicago is the chance to meet some of the best pipe carvers in the world...I was talking to Teddy at the show and he was holding three blocks of briar- He said "Pick one" I replied "Pick one what?" He said "Pick the piece of briar you would make a pipe from." I was almost stuttering at this point, because I really wouldn't have given these blocks a second look- they were all partial blocks or mis-shapen blocks that I would have passed on. I took a closer look and picked this one. He shakes his big Viking head up and down in approval and says "I give that one to you- do something fun with it..."
I'll keep you guys posted as it develops...(and although there were many memorable moments during the week, that was one of the best...)

Zack, you know that pipe goes to me righ? Don't even think about selling it to someone else.
Harris, The problem is you only buy traditional shapes...I'm going to channel my inner Dane for this one....

That is very cool indeed!

Looking forward to seeing what you turn that chunk of briar into. Have fun! :puffy:

It'll be a beauty I'm sure, for you it must seem like Piccasso stuck an easel in front of you and said "paint something". I'd imagine you'll be staring at that block for some time.

I'll enjoy following the developments of this remarkable thread. That piece of briar looks both challenging and laden with potential. Obviously, what you do is 'your own special talent' and once finished you give it back to Teddy. This 'project' is exciting!

I wonder what the other 2 pcs looked like? He probably had them there for a reason.
