It starts with a perfect night for a sip on the porch. The temp is not uncomfortable by any means, a very slight breeze, and I don't have to get up for work in the morning. I have my new pipe I've been enjoying for the past two nights amd 3 new aromatic blends I have yet to try. I sit down, make my decision as to which tobacco to smoke(an Irish Creame java blend), pack it up and head to the porch.........then it goes downhill from there. I get my pipe lit, puff a dozen times or so, tamp, and relight, then relight, then relight, then relight, then relight. About every 3rd or 4th puff I got out of the thing, I had to relight. And while trying to get the pipe to just stay smoking, I ended up giving myself a case of tounge bite which in turn didn't give me too much of a chance to taste the tobacco. So now I'm a bit bummed. I didn't get the good smoke I was wanting and I have to fight of tounge bite. Damn.

The tobacco didn't feel too moist. There is a possibility that I packed it too tight, I got a decent draw out of it, but I've had better too. I tried using my picking tool to loosen the baccy some, and I tried tightening it up some too. I just couldn't get it to light. Oh well, there's always next time.....and still 2 more flavors to try

Sometimes you just need to start all over and dumb the tobacco out and relight. If I am frustrated enough I just get out a blend I know I like and a new pipe.

usually this only happens to me if the tobacco is too moist, creating steam when u smoke and giving you tongue bite...but some tobaccos just seem to do this anyway. further to what has been written above, you could try blending this tobacco with another one, maybe 50/50 and see if that helps...sometimes you can create a really good smoke that way although it can be trial and error

I wouldn't be too hasty to discount this blend. There could be any number of reasons the blend didn't smoke well on that night, in that pipe, under those weather conditions, with that moisture content...to many things can be tweaked first

Look through some of John Patton's older posts. The advice he gives(dry more than you think you need to, tamp lighter than you think you need to, pack lighter than you think you need to) has been invaluable to me. Previously, I used to have smoking sessions that were exactly what you describe. Since I've followed Mr. Patton's advice, I've routinely been able to get through an entire bowl with just the initial light.
Hope that helps!

Was that John - tiltjlp - that put that out there?
Regardless, that approach provided a significant increase in the pleasure I get from a bowl.
Hows the bite this morning dongrey?

The bite isn't there this morning, so I'm happy about that. Although I did have a bit of a scratchy throat like I accidentally inhaled in my haste/frastration/eagerness to get the pipe to stay lit. Oh well, I sure that won't be my last sit down like that.
