an aromatic without the aromatic qualities would be a non-aromatic. If what you are looking for is more naturally made aromatics without the preservatives, then check out http://www.cornellanddiehl.com/ They have a good selection.

I guess the question is about natural toppings and flavorings as opposed to white Burley soaked in casing sauce to mimic some flavor. I often claim to be a non-aromatics smoker because I try to avoid the latter. One of my favorite flavored blends, following on Hauntedmyst's recommendation, is Two Friends' Valle Crucis, a Tarler & Pease creation blended by C&D. In my opinion the tin description is spot-on:
A blend of fine stoved Virginia and oriental tobaccos, rich Cyprian Latakia, black toasted Cavendish and just a pinch of Perique. The mixture is finished with a delicate top note of ginger, perfectly complimenting the complex flavors and wonderful aroma of the natural tobaccos. A subtle sweetness and gentle spice is present from first light to last puff, and a clean, dry ash demonstrates the tobacco's purity.
I can't smoke this stuff all the time, but when I do, as a refresher, I can't help but be reminded of Juicy Fruit™ gum; and c'mon now, who doesn't like that -- at least once in a while?

C and D is a good source and they just use distilled water and not anything else but the flavoring agent. You could get a blend with deers tongue and would have a natural blend. Also look at vtpipes.com. She uses flavoring powder and does not use the gunky casings that most do.

Well, the Swiss tobacco Schuerch Cornola uses natural Vanilla in it's Vanilla tabacco. It is quite a relief to smoke this one really!

You will by the way found quite a few additives in non-aromatics as well.

philblum makes an excellent point. I think it was Greg Pease who stated that practically all marketed Burley is "doctored" in some way -- either flavored or sweetened. You couldn't smoke it otherwise. ...or words to that effect.

And I'll swear that I've had some plain Va flakes that were sweetened in some way too.
But as Pease (once again) averred, if you can't be sure, then they must be doing it right.
