I spent the majority of my day yesterday trout fishing with a good friend. I had a corn cob full of 1Q going all day. I have to say, I have smoked 1Q in a few different pipes but it seems to sing for me the most when it's in a corn cob. I have noticed this with other aromatics as well. It seems that I prefer my cheaper mass produced aromatics in a corn cob in general. I don't smoke a lot of aromatics, and I can't say its true for all aromatics because I prefer W.O. Larsen Signature Vintage Mixture in a briar, but things like Captain Black, Amphora, 1Q...etc, just seem to taste better in a corncob. Go figure...another quirk in the land of pipe smoking.

Just about everything sings sooner or later in my cobs! I really have come to enjoy them. :)

I just ordered two MM Freehands last evening.

ohin3, one reason that your less pricey aromatics might tastes better in cobs is partly because the cobs absorb more moisture, both from the atmosphere, and from the tobaccos, which might be moister than your other blends. This ability of cobs to absorb large amounts of moisture, and then dissipate that moisture, as well as oils and flavorings from the tobacco, is what makes them so worthwhile.

Oldmaus, let us know if your new freehands have a metal ring on them or not? Thanks

Ohin3,....exact same experience here.
My favorite cob is dedicated to good old 1-Q....and is the daily smoke I can always look forward to sans any thought of a wet or hot smoke...or any dread that it might be one of those "get yer lighter out ten times" smokes.
My cob and 1-Q is my favorite smoke...it has been for a while now. :D

You guys may also want to try this with high end aromatics. I've found with the peterson blends I have that when theyre in my churchwarden, unless I do something to work a little moisture out they always get the dreaded gurgle towards the last third of the bowl, especially the special reserve. But soon as I fire up a bowl in the cob they smoke nice and dry regardless. My only problem is without the filter in, they burn far too hot and I keep getting chunks of tobacco through the bore.
