I need someone to wise me up  . How does a pipe tobacco fall into the "aromatic" category ?
I mean , they all simply by ignition produce smoke which has a aroma . Prince Albert , Carter Hall produce an "aroma " .
If you smoked dried oak leaves there would be an aroma ...........

Are "non-aromatics" pure tobacco ? I guess I thought that even the codger blends had some flavor additives.......
That's more about casing, which is different from topping. Of course, these are all marketing terms and subject to personal feelings and changes over time, as Embers points out. Common parlance. Today, an aromatic is typically a strong topping that is usually scented very differently, but people argue every day over what an aromatic tobacco is to them. I find most of the codger blends to be more of an aromatic, but I tend to enjoy Red Virginia, which is closer to the extreme of straight tobacco, until you get one that is not.

When I first started smoking a pipe, the number of 'aros' with latakia and other non-dessert type tobaccos was rather surprising. I had equated aromatics with the sweet, syrupy dessert-type smokes. Not so.
