It was based on directional paper tape machine which was a primitive form of sound recording device used to work out the firing positions of German batteries. From the piece of history they were able to create an exact replication of what those in the front line in France would have heard on that morning. It was pretty much as my Uncle described it to me that as the firing stopped across the front the birds starting tweeting again - seeing not posting on social media!!!
