I am 3 months new and have absorbed lot of info on tobacco. Whether Top 5, Top 10, 2019, 2020,2021, etc. I have used TobaccoReviews for a lot of reading about a blend. This morning I used the advanced search to look for the highest ratings with over 300 reviews. That should give me the best of the best.

I noticed 2 blends in the top 10 that I have not heard much fanfare about in my short pipe life. One is Squadron Leader and the other is Irish Flake. Are these just 2 that are great but have lost the spotlight to others?

Both great blends. TR is hit and miss for a lot of things but a good place to start. When I want to see different blends to check out, one of the best threads is the WAYS (What are you smoking) threads. You can really see what’s most popular as it happens and also find things that stand out because they are more unique. When something catches my attention and I want to know more, I look it up. YMMV.

Best? No. Most popular, maybe. 'Best' in a subjective field doesn't really exist.

To reference another thread, do you like pineapples on pizza? Where would a pineapple pizza rank in the Top 10 of pizzas?

That said, since Squadron Leader is a TOP 10 tobacco of all time, I really should be tripling the price on my FS ad. :ROFLMAO:

Did not mean to upset any fellow enthusiast. Yes highly “popular” rather than “best”. If I have not tried many pizza’s I would want to try them all for myself, but I cannot afford them all so I look at reviews of pizzas for guidance. I guess if I saw a pineapple pizza in the top 10 yet never heard of it after 50 videos on top 10 pizzas then I would question it.

Starting to see some of this is like womenswear fashion, or my sons baseball bat. It’s all good but may go out of style for the next big thing on the rack.

Yes and NO. It just means people felt like leaving positive reviews. One thing to keep in mind is that you can leave a single review. That means in no way could it be considered authoritative and final. That said from what I've heard about those two if they sound like something you'd like you probably will. If they don't you probably won't. Which is another thing to consider when reading a review. The person bought that cause it sounded like something they'd like (who knows their process) which can mean that a blend that many people would hate and only some would love but doesn't surprise anyone is going to have a lot of good reviews. Imagine a tin of tobacco that says it has the aromas of a hot wet dumpster outside of a daycare that has infants, now who is going to buy that? Someone who that sounds good too! Now if it has the aroma and taste it promises it will probably get some good ratings. I guess what I am saying is reviews are just peoples opinions. They can be helpful but they can't say this is the best this is the worst or even what you'll think if you smoke something.
And one last thing if you pay attention here you'll notice a good number of this blend revisited. Where someone says my initial review wasn't right. Now some people won't write a review until they know a blend others will review a blend before they've finished a bowl. And that's fair because a review is just an account of one persons experience they had with a blend an experience they wanted to share. Maybe most people who smoke those are like it's o.k. so why write a review?

Only you can decide what is best to your tastebuds. Reviews can be a helpful guide when exploring new tobaccos; if the list of flavour notes in a review appeals to me or sounds intriguing, I might check out that blend. Someone like JimInks seems to carefully consider what notes he's getting from a smoke and that can be informative, even helpful. But, it's always a gamble. Ultimately, you have to try it to know if it works for you.

my favorite reviews are the ones that just reveal the reviews lack of skill at pipe smoking. A lot of one star reviews are like that. IT BURNT TOO Fast and scorched my tongue and tasted like HOT AIR with no flavor no matter how hard I puffed on it. (I've seen that review by the way). Had to check out the guys other reviews and either he needs help or it's Sable messing with us.

When looking at tobacco reviews, some of the reviewers tastes are in line with mine on 90 percent of the blends I like. If they give a favorable review on a blend I have not tried, I would not be aftaid to at least sample it. That is the way I go about it anyway.

The other ones are the type reviewing a class of blend they don’t like. “I can’t stand Latakia so I give GLP Renaissance 1 star!”
