The only thing you can say about tornados is if you have an underground shelter, you're almost always going to be okay. Your house of course is toast. For places where underground shelters are not possible, they can be brutal. It seems like in recent years the tornado belt has shifted southward to areas where you can't build basements. Up here in Kansas and Missouri we used to get a large number of tornados, but they have declined considerably. Death tolls for us are usually 1,2 maybe 3 people at most. When tornados aren't expected in a metropolitan, they can be devastating. See Joplin tornado where are at least 160 people were killed.

I grew up with them while living in southern Indiana but we didn’t have a basement. Had a couple of close calls but thankfully none ever touched down on our house.
We’ve had 2 in the last year that skirted New Orleans & took pretty much the same path. Being below sea level mean no chance of having a basement or underground storm shelter. It does concern me that tornado alley seems to be shifting more towards the south or at least getting them more frequently. Alabama has been getting hit especially hard the last 5-6 years.
I hope everyone that’s been affected by this week’s tornado gets on their feet. The photos I’ve seen are brutal. They aren’t very optimistic about the casualty count staying the same either. (Currently in the 20’s). Prayers & comfort for everyone there.
