Cheap, flavorless, low grade tobacco covered in preservatives and syrup until it's a sticky goo.
Preferred by rookies, poseurs and those recovering from major surgery.
But that's just my opinion.
I enjoy Captain Black white. Its goopy and will need lots of pipe cleaners to keep your pipe clean but every once in awhile it hits the spot for me.
I have to disagree with Bigvan. I probably have a soft spot for the stuff because its all my Uncle Bob smoked for 30 years. He was a Fire Chief in upstate NY and neither a poser or rookie ::
No exceptions for ANYONE ! :nana:
My point wasnt actually Uncle Bob, but there are a lot of the old guys that smoked one cheap OTC their whole life. You're right about the cheap grade of tobacco and the sugary toppings, but a lot of people like it fine anyway. I doubt I could smoke it on a regular basis, but like fast food sometimes it hits the spot (and some people live on the stuff).
I think somebody else on the forum put it this way. It's the Budweiser of tobacco. It's low grade and pretty tasteless but it's the same every time and there are times when nothing beats it.
"If you like fast food, cheap hookers and crappy beer, you're going to love Captain Black"
I think they should use that in their advertising.
Nice one, Lonestar!
I like it, smoked it for years when I first picked up pipe smoking. Give it a try. I know 4noggins sells it in bulk pretty cheap, grab an oz. I used to blend mine with Prince Albert. Made a good all day smoke. It does tend to be moist so either cut it with a codger burley or let it dry out a while.
My mix was 1cup of PA for 1/2cup of CBW.
I love Captain Black. Its the only aromatic I like. It is goopy but I leave pouch open for a few hours which fixes that. As for who likes it. As far as I know its still the best selling pipe tobacco in North America so there is more then me that smoke it..... :puffpipe:
P.S. The women love the smell of it too....lol
It's not too bad, I've only bought 2 pouches in 6 years only because I have so much other tobacco to smoke. I think it's better than some of the other drugstore blends. 6 bucks a pouch, hell why not keep one on hand.
Captain Black is what I learned to smoke a pipe on, and the aroma really takes me back. It doesn't cause me any tongue bite and the taste is nice, simple, and its an uncomplicated smoke. I don't like it as much as I like Carter Hall, but I like to keep some of it on hand for when I get that craving.
