Sutliff Virginias aren’t tasty to me unless pushed a bit. I don’t like to do this, and they usually leave a coating feeling in my mouth no matter how calmly I smoke them, but I do find a flavor I enjoy when I push them a bit hot.

I guess what I am wondering is anyone else encounter a blend that smokes better with less sipping and not just the amount of flavor but where it does the opposite of what most blends do which most blends have the most nuance in when smoked with a gentle touch. And again I am not talking about burning ones self just smoking more vigorously. I ask because there are like 2 or 3 blends that work that way for me and if anything the blends that are like that seem to be already very flavorful but better defined when vigor is applied.

I try not to smoke hot as it's not good for the pipe, so what I do is take a long slow draw to fill my mouth with thick smoke, hold it for a few seconds then exhale, the flavour is ace with no tongue bite

I think most white burley based blends taste better when puffed up nice and hot, but I've hurt myself more than a few times trying to chase that flavor. Usually, right as I get to the desired flavor it's too late. I've even experienced inner earaches that lasted for days from retrohaling hot burley. Now, because of this, I rarely smoke burley unless it's semois or kentucky (which is a fundamentally different leaf) or condimental like in some Gawith and a few other English blends.

None I can think of. If anyone around me didn't know I was smoking, they'd swear I had an unlit pipe hanging from my mouth.

I've heard other people say this kind of thing. Is it at least an exaggeration? How do you keep it lit without basically any smoke? My pipes make a lot less smoke than my cigarettes and cigars, but they fill a room up after smoking a big bowl.

No exaggeration. You really have to look for my smoke, only minute wisps. The breath smoking video I did was me really pushing the pipe to make the smoke visible on video.

I don’t think he’s exaggerating. I had a bowl of Sutliff Creme Brûlée in a Country Gent cob this morning in the garage. Sipped slowly enough that the air purifier—4 ft away—never kicked in except on the initial light, and it comes on at a hint of smoke. Lasted over 90 minutes with an ash dump and relight just past halfway. I don’t always smoke burley or English that slowly, but I’m finding the aro flavor when the pipe’s always just on the edge of going out.

Yes I agree. I get the most flavor the closer to going out I get. That's why I'm always intrigued when I hear this.

learning how to pack a pipe is so key. You pack it right the stuff keeps burning it's self at a nice slow rate. Of course it can't be too moist but a few days in a popped tin usually takes care of that so....

I let mine dry overnight in a little wooden tray my wife bought me.
