Recently I watched all of Monty Python's Flying Circus and it got me wondering what blend(s) Graham Chapman smoked, he seems to have been a pretty diehard pipe smoker if all the times he smoked on screen is any indication. I'd imagine he smoked an English or VaPer (maybe straight VA), can't imagine he was an aromatic smoker unless it was a Lakeland. Does anybody have any info on his smoking preferences?

Probably a British OTC. He was rather partial to the 'Male Corona' cigar as well since he 'batted off the other food' as we would politely describe it in the U.K. Apparently he took up pipe smoking at the age of 15.

Why? Those are the most sold pipe tobaccos.
It just doesn't jive with his macho image, plus I'm not sure that aros were nearly as popular in his day

I don't know anything about British OTCs but I could see it especially given the amount he smoked. I was about to say I didn't know he also smoked cigars then I caught the innuendo lmfao. He did smoke cigars in a few sketches, plus one where he smoked a cigarette.
From another site:
Graham Chapman- St. Bruno Ready Rubbed and Three Nuns "Mixture" (probably the Empire Blend)

Ah exactly the sort of thing I guessed. Thanks for the link, I forgot Smoking Pipes was such a great resource for that sort of info.

I remember him dying of some sort of cancer. Checked it out, and it wasn't lung cancer. Since I'm not a member of the Python, I won't say "party pooper!"

Some of the burliest guys I've seen in B&Ms are there for the aros. Nothing masculine or feminine about tobacco use.
Of course not but according to Cleese Graham's macho image was very deliberate and the pipes were part of that image.

Tonsil cancer that metastasized to his bones, quite dreadful. On one of the documentaries about Python one of the living members attributed it to his smoking, which was pretty heavy by all accounts. All the drinking might've been a factor too, even though he'd been sober for several years before the cancer.
I'd be more interested to know the air/speed velocity of an unladen swallow.
What do you mean? African or European swallow?

I have no idea what tobaccos he smoked. I got the pleasure of attending one of his campus lectures in 1986 or 87............. I can't recall, but it was a really good time, in Athens, Ohio.
Graham was a Great man, so full of life, and he was really down to Earth and very entertaining..........
May he rest in peace, I miss him.............

Lucky fellow. I met Eric Idle at a convention back in the 90s but would've loved to have met all of the Pythons in their prime.
