I recently bought some of this Virginia, advertised as "Flue Cured Virginia Red Leaf"

This leaf is typical of what I received.
Question: What are the two different spots on the leaf? The whitish spots do not appear to be mold, they are attached to the leaf.
Thanks.

Yep, "frogeye" ... a.k.a. Cercospora nicotianae would be a very good guess.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

"When numerous spots are present on cured leaves, the quality of tobacco smoke is seriously compromised. Infection by C. nicotianae reduces alkaloid, sugar and total phenol concentrations, while increasing the nitrogen content, mainly in infected leaves from higher stalk positions (Stavely and Chaplin, 1972). Reduction of sugars and total phenols is greater in flue-cured than in air-cured leaves."

I'm just having a b*tch of a time finding consistent quality whole leaf tobacco. I've been sent moldy tobacco, tobacco covered in nylon thread fluff, and now this. It seems that the retailers who sell by the pound end up with the stuff that everyone else rejects.
Does anyone have a source for quality whole leaf? I'm looking for Virginia, Burley and Orientals.

Well, the cat is out of the bag, and it's wearing pajamas: I'm working on a steam-pressed Virginia/Dark Fired/Thin Mint plug.

I don't know where you get your leaf from, but you might try
http://www.leafonly.com/index.php or
http://wholeleaftobacco.com/main.sc, if you haven't already.I've never done business with either of these companies, so I can't vouch for them.

Yes, I've worked with both of those suppliers. Don Carey at wholeleaf is a good guy, knows his stuff, and is responsive to his customers. He's an honest broker. I would heartily recommend him as a vendor.
Leafonly is a different story. I found them to be unresponsive to customers concerns. Better marketing than Don, but don't be fooled by that.
Both companies sell what they are able to buy, which varies, quality-wise. I would like to find a source that has a broader and deeper product range in the non-cigar tobacco area, with consistently high grade leaf.
It's a small market for vendors right now, but one that will grow rapidly once the expanded draconian taxes on pipe tobacco take effect. In short order we may all be doing our own "personal use only" pipe blend manufacturing.
