I'm sure it's been done here before, but for those that don't know what it is I'll explain.

A box full of "pipe stuff" could be anything including but not limited to pipes, tampers, tobacco, reamers, cleaners, rests, stands, cigars, cutters, lighters, matches, etc. Is sent out. Participants can take anything from the box and add anything to the box before passing it along to the next participant. Each participant is responsible for the payment of outgoing shipping to the next participant. If you take something from the box you must add something to the box, this is all on the honor system. It would be limited to the continental US and only to members in good standing for a minimum of a year with at least 100 posts.

I'm willing to start the box and organize the pass if there is enough interest.

IF... you do a box pass. I recommend just keeping it to members who have been on here and active. If someone asks for an exception to meeting minimum requirements, I suggest that you just ignore them. Also, if someone has just made some random posts to meet the requirements, I would be skeptical.

The only repercussion you would have for someone stealing the box would be to get them banned from here, and someone who comes to the Boxpass with nefarious plans, only meeting the minimum requirements probably hasn't developed a reputation that will be affected if he gets banned.

It sounds cruel, but really, fuck 'em. If they want to be included, they can post and get to know us for a while. They can pick up on a box pass next year. If someone joins JUST to get in on a boxpass, fuck 'em.

Just my suggestions. puffy

I've already gotten two box passes since I have been here. I don't really need to be in on another. But, if someone wanted something from my cellar to be added, I would gladly donate it. Unless you plan to be careless and forgo my suggestions. I can just as easily dump a jar into the dirt, as much as give it to someone who plans to screw you guys over.

Also, I would make sure that everyone knows that they have to reseal the box and take it to the post office. It can be a hassle, but if someone can't even get that done, screw 'em. This isn't for them.

It's been done here before and quite successfully for a year or two before some clown steals the box. And, some clown here ALWAYS steals the box.
Having run a very successful and long-lasting Box Pass here on PipesMagazine, I leave you with this insight: No matter how well run, how diligent you are, how well you vet participants, how well you run herd, the Box Pass will eventually fail. They all do. It's simply out of your control. Some bozo will f*ck it up.

A year or two is more than I expected, of course someone will eventually screw it up, to be expected.

Would you say 1year+ Lifers is a sufficient bar?

I am not sure. You could check with Woods, or someone who has done this before the get a better idea of what bars have been used before. I just know that I see bars set, and people will bend the rules for someone, and then it all falls apart.
If you set bars, just stick to them. You really don't want someone to join or to all of a sudden get active, because they just want to join the boxpass. Instead, just include people who are already active... would be my $0.02.

I believe that we did have some sort of minimal requirement before, like we have with the Secret Santa, the theory being that it's less likely that someone with a connection to and investment in the community is going to fuck it. A year and 200 post minimum might be a good threshold. Having helped seed one of these boxes, I'm really not interested in watching it disappear down a hole.

The king of the box pass was @woodsroad who to my certain knowledge was the only man alive who managed to make the thing work because he is something approaching an organizational genius! He passed it on to another chap who ran it for a while and then it sort of disappeared and I have no idea what is going on with it these days. If you do decide to 'volunteer' for this thankless task Dan will send you the template for the rules of the road so to speak. I will happily donate some tobacco to the project but not participate!

After reading the above thread.... I haven't seen Python on here in a long while, but you may want to check with the mods (maybe admin - Kevin) before going much further with a box pass idea.
Probably not necessary. I get the distinct impression that they have all failed in the past and nobody wants anything to do with it. I can't say I'm really surprised by the response.

I love this forum. You guys are all great guys to talk tobacco and pipes with. I have even met quite a few of you... but, I wouldn't lend my car or a box of aged and hard to find tobacco to any of you. No offence. puffy

The box pass that I ran was a lot of fun, and a lot of work. I enjoyed the work because I knew that the participants were all having a good time with it. Until they weren't. If I was Kevin @admin, I wouldn't allow another one. It always ends poorly, and (if you couldn't tell already) that resentment lasts forever. Not unlike a bad marriage.
