That is a common carved shape, but they were inspired by the famous pipe of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president that smoked it while in captivity after the Civil War. http://pipesmagazine.com/blog/pipe-smokers-of-the-past/jefferson-davis-president-of-the-confederate-states-pipe-smoker/

You have a nice pipe, with a great story to go with it. Enjoy!! And, welcome to the forums.

Hmmm, do you smoke pipes? I'm just wondering, because if you put that in your mouth, you'd set your forehead on fire. The stem is upside down.
Let's see what I can give you more about the pipe, besides the huge article about the history of that design. It is made of a material known as Meerschaum. Whether it is carved from true block meerschaum or compressed would require me to see it in person. But, the heavier it is, the less likely it is to be pure block. It is also most likely carved in Turkey, where they mine the meerschaum stone. It was pure white when first carved and it has gotten a color (or patina) from people smoking it and the oils from the tobacco and smoke have given it that color. You can still buy that same design today brand new. It is a very popular design motif, mostly for the reasons stated in the article.
There is absolutely no way that I can give you a date or artist. In Turkey those guys just set all day and carve, carve, carve, cranking out hundreds of pipes. Unless it has a name on it or a date...
What more info would you like? We have a few more guys who are way more knowledgeable than me, but that all depends on what information you are looking for.

Victory, check ebay for similar pipes. But, I'm afraid that unless you have the one true Jefferson Davis pipe, it's probably not going to fetch more than $15. But, i could be wrong. I am no expert. My suggestion is to just pack it up and smoke it. ...after you turn the stem back around. I wouldn't want you to set fire to your head.
Ha ha, or Tom is making you an offer.

Eh - just ribbing a bit.
He/she made a similar post as his/her first 6 months ago and never responded or was heard from again until this one.
Picking the brains of all these experts regarding provenance and value and not even introducing yourself? That irritates me probably more than it should.
SORRY
EDIT: ...any by "similar post" I mean exactly the same.

That offer wasn't in USD it was in monopoly money. I raise that bid in monopoly money to 10k. I hope you take credit cards because some of the new monopoly versions don't come with cash!

Maybe, the pipe would sell better if he turned the stem around.

Victory, do a search for "meerschaum claw egg pipes" and then click on "used" condition, and "worldwide" and you'll see that they sell most often for between $5-20.

Smoke it.

I don't think you'll get much for it. Sorry.

Hey, welcome to pipe collecting! Yes, it's a meerschaum, not ivory, most definitely. Collecting meers can be very rewarding, and not all collectors smoke them. Google search through the webs for more information on meerschaum to get an idea of how they're made, colored by patina, prices, and even different makers. This will be a good starter for you.

And, be sure to post your finds. We all love to look at pipes on this forum.

Good luck, and cheers!
