. My Buddy and Lawyer from New Orleans sent me a King Cake, from Antoines, best ever in the Mardi Grais Tradition .
I've had an Antiones, my daughter used to live in Metairie, delicous!
Speaking of Mardi Gras, we just returned from the NOLA area. My granddaughters Christening was on Saturday. Mardi Gras is just starting and we saw our first parade on Sunday. This was a family type parade (Krewe of Carrollton) and it was interesting.
We were on St. Charles Street. Parades are like a big tailgate, but no game (the parade is the game) . I did get to see two of my favorite Krewes, the 610 Stompers and the Krewe of Elvi. There was a lot of drinking, but no crazy drunkedness.
I love the Stompers.
The Kiss float was cool.
Shameless plug of my granddaughter. The gown and hat were my daughters are her Christening (1988).
I'm still a bit puzzled by the Krewe culture. These folks spend a lot of money to get into these Krewe's and then participate in each parade. There are parades all weekend leading up to Mardi Gras day (Fat Tuesday).
The parade we attended ran from 11 Am to nearly 7 Pm (we stayed about five hours with the little one).

We've been to NOLA four times over the years. I love that city and it's food, but when I see a King Cake like that Bradley, it makes me wish I wasn't a diabetic.

Al, the Krewe culture is hard to explain. It's sort of like getting together several times a year with a few thousands of your closest friends and planning the biggest blow-out party ever. Other than that it doesn't make any sense to the "common" folks (those of us who don't make an annual salary that puts you into the 50% tax bracket).
On the other hand, I rode in a Krewe in Slidell for 15 years. What I paid for annual dues, bead and stuffed animals wouldn't have paid even half of the dues to ride in one of the big New Orleans parades. We would get together four times a year for meetings, have float group parties and we used to do a big annual ball where we elected the King and Queen.
Parade day for me started around 8 AM at a krewe breakfast complete with Bloody Mary's. It ended around 5 pm when the trash and the drunks would be shoved off the floats.

Thanks pappymac, I'm starting to get the picture. My In-laws explained to me the very exclusive "super krewes" (Endymion, muse & Bacchus)and the social pecking order, balls, etc. Endymion has over 80 floats their parades.

My daughter now lives in Mandaville. We got caught in their parade as it ended. They were lining up 40-couple floats to ferry back across the 24 mile bridge, in the driving rain.

When we get down there with more time, I need to look you up Brad! I need to see more of LA, not just NOLA.

Wow, this was scary. My SIL and daughter were at this parade (Endymion)about a block from the accident. A drunk driver it appears.

My late wife and I honeymooned in New Orleans in 1976, at the Queen Anne's Hotel, just off Bourbon St. We went to Antoines and other well-known restaurants. The Preservation Hall jazz was among the highlights. Visited again on business years later and visited a few of our "old haunts." Had a work colleague who started her journalism career at the Times-Picquiaune. That is a beautiful King's Cake; only in NOLA.
