I have two pipe racks, one custom made by Two Cousins from a gift certificate,

that holds 12 pipes with two or three tucked on the shelves and in the drop-lid

compartment, and an inherited walnut rack that holds ten pipes and a tobacco

jar. In addition, I have more than a dozen pipes that live on the edges of book

shelves and in a small basket on said book shelves. Question: Do I ante up for

another rack and give these strays a home, or do I stick with the basket plan

and hope this limits PAD? Mind you, I doubt I'm through buying pipes, but I

feel that not racking them may help suppress PAD to a degree. (For any

newcomers, PAD is pipe acquisition disorder, the tendency to compulsively

buy pipes.)

It seems to me that you are dealing with several issues. The Two Cousins stuff is first class in my book. Are your "basket pipes" in need of an expensive custom case? An alternative might be to check out antique stores for cabinets you could customize. We have a Habitat For Humanity store near us that has things left over from building projects and their prices are dirt cheap. So, you have a lot of options and it appears that you want to display your pipes. Good luck with your decision. I'd like to know what you do.

I'm in the same boat. I need a new rack. My lovely wife asked if I'd quit leaving my loose pipes scattered all over the liquer cabinet. Of course if you buy a new rack then you HAVE to fill it. I mean who wants bare spots right?
I'm looking at something I can mount on the wall this time around I think. They only rule I have to follow is that it matches our furniture. I can live with that.
Edit. Pipeguy remind me of something. I've been looking at spice racks. They are cheaper and some of the older wood ones can fit pipes pretty easy. I was hoping to find one at a garage sale this summer.

I'd go for another rack but you may have a point in limiting PAD. I commissioned a 60 pipe cabinet that should be finished any day now so I have several spots to fill myself.

I just filled my 12 pipe wall mount that I found at a recycling center for $20. I may have another that will need to be filled soon lol That's the problem... it WILL need to be filled! If you already have the pipes to fill a rack I say go for it!

I think all one's pipes that are regularly smoked and cared for should be racked. If you don't smoke the pipes pass them on to someone who will use them, and do so for a reasonable price.

Thanks guys for your ideas. I spent some days making this decision. Today, I finally ordered a

fairly basic (but not inexpensive) 18-pipe rack from pipetobacco.com. This should hold all the

rest of my non-racked pipes currently living on bookshelves and in a small basket. It likely won't

keep me from once again overflowing capacity. If I can bear to part with any, I may trade a group

of pipes for an upgrade into one or two. Currently I'm refraining from buying one of two low level

pipes I have reason to believe would be truly good smokers. Trying to keep the population of pipes

down. I'm not sure if I'll rack the cobs. They look at home just hanging out on the book shelves.

I think I can mount the pipe rack on the wall; it appears to be suitable for either table or wall mount.

I'll give an update if it warrants it. Hope I'm satisfied.

I have bought several pipe racks for 6-8 pipes at antique stores. Highest I've paid was $20. Most were $2-$10.

Rack be damned! I need another cabinet! My wife wants her curio cabinet back for her inkwells (the pipe storage was suppose to be temporary). If your wife is complaining about the pipes laying around, go for another rack.
Just got a rather cool glass lay-down rack for 6 pipes. Think I paid $8.00 for it at an antique store. I've decided to dedicate it to the bulldogs that I seem to love.

Thanks rothnh. After running through the Etsy site, I feel like I did about right, in terms of rack capacity and not getting a

full piece of furniture (I already have the Two Cousins rack). So this reassures me I'm on the right track. One or two

members did well with antique store racks, but I wanted to have a fair number of pipes on this rack, not get several smaller

ones. So though I already ordered, this helped bolster my decision. The one I ordered measures out, so it will fit where

I need it, and hold the pipes I need racked. Plus the inevitable couple more. And of course, the price seems commensurate.

rothnh, you probably don't want another career, but you are eminently qualified to run a pipe related business, or several.

If there's anything to report, pro or con, once the rack arrives, I will.
