I have a Peterson Rocky Donegal 268 that was my grandfathers. I've heard that the last stamping in the sterling is the year.(it is stamped Q)if that's the case, it's from 1956. Is this correct? Did they make Donegals in 1956?

Here is the hallmarking chart from the Peterson Website:
Depending upon the font, the "Q" could stand for 1911, 1932, 1958, interestingly there is no "Q" in the decade of the 1980s, and finally 2001.
I hope that this information is useful to you.
There's Qs and there's Qs. It could be a 1958 or a 2001. Depends on the nomenclature of the pipe, the style of the lettering of that Q, and the second hallmark. Newer pipes have the 925 stamping as the second hallmark.
Pictures would help.
