Well I just purchased JT Cooke #7 a beautiful medium apple with Cumberland Stem and due to the effects of hurricane Matthew it will be more than a week getting to me but worth the wait,

That blast.....
Sort of.
Jimmy developed and mastered a type of rustication that uses air pressure & media to remove material, but isn't "blasting" in the usual sense of the word.
Most people have seen or used those pencil-sized airbrushes used in model making and other small project finishing. (Even women's makeup application, believe it or not.) Imagine a sandblast rig of similar size. One that uses tiny nozzles and really fine media.
With such a tool, Cooke then spends many hours delicately following a briar block's growth rings. The end result is a distinctive finish that says JT COOKE from across the room.
Last I checked, his work is quite popular.
Nice score, Mr. Banjo. :D

Jim spends a lot of time creating a blast, carving out a pattern that did not exist originally in the wood. In other words, he creates the texture. I have long believed this, and it has been confirmed by other "master" pipe makers.
Board --
There has been contentiousness orbiting this issue for as long as Jimmy has been doing the technique.
The problem is phrases like "following grain" are subjective and can't be meaningfully measured, but people start arguing with each other based on their own interpretation OF the phrase.
I'm mentioning it because going down that road on this board would resolve nothing, the FDA Shit seems to have put many people in an irritable mood lately, and we don't need another closed thread.
NOTE: Hagley has forgotten more about pipes than all but a few hundred people in the PipeWorld ever knew. I'm not disagreeing with him. Just pointing out that by definition, subjective disagreements can't be resolved through argument.

But what about violence?
That's a philosophical question. If one person/group/tribe eliminates another to end a dispute, is the ARGUMENT won, or has the source of dissenting opinion simply been removed so that there can BE no argument?
In any case, I know that Kevin has equipped each moderator with a squadron of nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, and an NSA-worthy app which shows every board member's physical location at all times. You do the math.
