Anise / Licorice

I have always loved black licorice / anise flavors. Black jelly beans, Good and Plenty, and licorice ropes were some of my favorite childhood treats. I have been searching for pipe tobaccos with a noticeable licorice note. Having tried Solani Aged Burley Flake, Bengal Slices, and War Horse Green, I can say that none of them have really scratched the itch. I occasionally get a hint of anise in the smoke, but more often am just left with a pleasant 'cool' sensation in my mouth afterward. ABF and Bengal Slices have remained in my rotation regardless as tobaccos I enjoy.

As an aside, I tried a Toscano Toscanello Aroma Anice cigar/cheroot and was smacked in the face with the richest most licorice-forward flavor ever.

Any recommendations on how to get a stronger anise note from pipe tobacco?

Licorice is one of those flavors I wish we had more of, it can be polarizing. I love licorice. I had a bowl from a 70-year-old 10 of Prince Albert at the Richmond Pipe show and it was awesome, it wasn’t exactly licorice but definitely had that coumarin deer tongue taste and it reminded me of what we’re missing these days… licorice blends might fall into that category. Hopefully there are still some out there, top of mind is Half & Half.

You can easily add either anise or licorice root extract to any blend. Be sure to dilute it well before applying! Or not.

Anise is weird for me. Normally, I can't stand it. Just the though of black licorice makes me want to gag. And don't get me started on Sambuca. However, give me a pile of pizzelles and I'll fight you for them and eat them all myself.

As was mentioned, Blackpool, and also Kingsbridge Esoterica blends. Also, many Gawith Hoggarth and Co. blends feature anise.

Not sure you will ever find a strong licorice flavor forward tobacco. Peter Heinrich's Dark Strong works for me.
Maybe throw a piece of licorice candy in your mouth as you puff on a licorice Forward tobacco.

Take Toscano cigar, tear it up, place in pipe....BOOM!!!

Put a whole tascano in a mason jar with some tobacco for about a week, the flavor will transfer to the tobacco without being overwhelming.

This works particularly well with Peterson's University Flake.

Sutliff Windsor 805 Match. A little goes a long way in blending.

Like you I've been on the hunt for strong licorice flavored tobacco. So far WHG is the strongest I've found. I may have to get some of those Toscanos.
