It takes a 9mm filter, do I HAVE to use a insert to bring it down to 6mm or smaller to get a good smoke?

The only way to find out is smoke with an insert, and without.

I use an insert on my 9mm Sav. as otherwise, at least to my preference, the draw is too open.

I'm with phil67 on this one. I have Savinelli's that I use the insert and some that I don't. It's pipe dependent for me so try with and without and determine what works best for you. I know some guys who use the balsa filters but they are few and far between.

Savenelli make some pipes without balsa inserts, if you can find what you want in those series. Most of their

unfinished pipes, which used to be their seconds, were without filters, but they are becoming rare as new pipes.

Their Oscar Lucite pipes are without filters as are some others like their churchwarden 601. I love Savenellis but

I just don't like the balsa inserts or the adaptors which I feel have a taste and do not draw as well as their pipes

without a filter.

Thanks for fixing the pic! I found that I like the draw better sans the filter.
