If you have and enjoy a gourd calabash with one of those mushroom-looking meer bowls, get a briar one made for the same pipe. You'll love it even more. Lower, sleeker, there's grain to admire, and it's LIGHTER.
Did I mention that it's LIGHTER?
Having one converted my 60's-era Bauer from one of those "look much, smoke little" pipes into a regular.
55.6 grams, 7.1" long

What a neat idea George. I have always wanted a calabash, now I have at least two more reasons.

Nice, dig the new look. Unfortunately my only gourd Calabash had a ceramic bowl, it was promptly traded for an old tub of Edgeworth. This idea never crossed my mind.

does it weigh significantly less?
19.5 grams for the wood bowl, 35.5 grams for the meer
(16 grams difference is a lot on the end of a 7" long pipe)

Pressed meer is heavier than the real thing. It's all you'll ever find in an everyday-grade gourd basher, though.

Very nice!
I've considered doing the same thing. I have the gourd from an old calabash pipe here. No bowl, no ferrule, no stem; just the gourd. I thought it might be cool to have several bowls made for it by different carvers. One pipe, many makers.

I think my scale needs a new battery (the display is getting dim), plus that sort of image is hard to take a picture of, plus there are several processing steps between my camera and your computer screen...
...but if you look really close you can make out the numerals if you already know what they are: 35.5 and 19.5
.
