So I have been pleasantly surprised, not that I thought it would be a bad smoker, but I think it is now my best. It's not even broken in yet... I'm just working on my third bowl in it. It has been a champ and it gives a nice long smoke. To me it has been more than worth what I paid :puffy:

The rusticated one I got at the TAPS show.

As I'm rebuilding my collection, I would agree with theboz. Of the new pipes I've smoked, so far I've been amazed at how good my new Savinelli has been.
Hardly scientific opinion, since there are so many factors, not the least of which is the tobacco in it. But there was no bite and it was a very rich and satisfying smoke. The stem issue should improve with some application of the tips I've read in here.
Considering buying another Savinelli, but which one - so many shapes.
Curiosity question: Why do so many people like the rusticated finish? I prefer smooth that shows off the grain/stain. Is it just a new trend because of the lack of good briar? Birdseye in a pipe wood seems rare these days.
Re: preference for rusticated pipe style - As Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" :P

Boudreaux- Actually I prefer smooth or partial rustication, but this one just caught my eye while I was at the show and was pretty cheap for its line(which I'm not sure what it is but I've seen the same pipe for about double what I paid). I also prefer partial bents, but as I said...it was just the right one at that moment.
*Edit-Also for anyone that's curious, I was smoking some leftover samples, I had a bowl of both Jackknife Plug and Low Country Tobacco: Waccamaw with a cigar in between to let it rest some. I enjoyed both tobaccos.

boz - Smoking it with or without the balsa filter? I was wondering if that was what made my experience what it was.
Funny, the more I read on here, the more convinced I am that there are as many varied prefernces in pipes and tobacco blends as there are smokers... but I guess that's "horse racing."

My one Sav is one of my best if not the best smoker as well, and it's not completely broken in either. I'd love another one, but with my new Brigham, a couple of Trypis pipes and a new cob I think I better lay off the PAD for a bit.

Excellent choice. I have about 10 Savs and all are great pipes.(smoking a deLuxe billiard as I write this) You get a lot for your money with that line.

Have to agree with papipeguy, I have two Sav's that are great smokers and I'm looking to acquire more. They have consistently been good smokers, and unlike some of my other pipes (some quite expensive) have smoked well with all my favorite tobaccos and have required little break-in.
Plus, it's an affordable pipe with a fabulous history, and a range of shapes, finishes and levels to meet anyone's budget.

Just scored an estate Preben Holm to replace my currently "lost" two, and also a new Savinelli Onda bent.

+1 to the positive comments above. So far, I've noticed the same thing. It smoked great right out of the box.

I love my Savs -- definitely my favorite brand of pipe. Most of my Savs are incredible smokers. I also love the balsa filters, although I understand that most people like to toss them out.
