An Oddball Marxman Vest Pocket

I’ve always wanted a nice example of a vest pocket pipe and for $20 plus $7 shipping and taxes, I bought a Marxman.

Not an ancient, oil cured, aged , unstained, unvarnished and unpainted Algerian briar New York New York Marxman, but this one came in the box the gooderns did.

Some lucky Dad smoked it half a bowl under the Christmas tree and it’s slept in a drawer for maybe seventy years.





What an elegant piece!

Somewhere I have a French made Marxman with the 27 West 24th address line stickered over on the red box.

Wonder how long the box supply lasted?

They advertised one in the 1908 Sears catalog and I’ve read about them elsewhere.

Somewhere I have an opera pipe which is sort of a cousin with an oval bowl, but not the swiveling stem.

The idea behind a vest pocket pipe is the vested gentleman would have a pipe folded up in his vest pocket.

Marxman sold some oddball stuff.

not only did I already know what a vest pipe is. I knew a guy that had one and would keep it in his vest pocket. He never bought pipe tobacco but the local didn't mind him smoking a sample from the jars since the pipe was that small.

Looking at it, it had to be (mostly) machine made. Maybe there was tooling over in Italy for the gadgety curiosity and Bob Marx himself contracted for a few.

That’s a genuine Marxman arrow stamp.

And it does look like Algerian briar.
