I know there are a lot of good military guys here so I thought i'd ask. I served during "war time" though the war was winding down and I never saw action, but I keep getting stuff from the American Legion. It isn't expensive but I'm not sure if I need one more place to pay dues (I'm a member of several Masonic bodies). Is it worth it to join the American Legion?

If you have one that's local and active, I would say yes. Unfortunately I have neither.

I joined the Legion a few years ago but I don't belong to a local chapter. I pay my dues and get the magazine, but that's about all. I could be more involved if I wanted, and one day I might, but not much now. I do list it on my resume under "community involvement".

I don't list anything military on my resume'. It seems to repel potential employers, except for ones in security or personal protection. That's just my experience, though.

As a guy who was in charge of hiring for a fedex station baron...the first things I looked for was scouting and military experience.

as a man who served his country, I know what goes into the training you had to have. Be proud of the time you served and put it

on your resume...you might be surprised. if there was a flag waving smiley face on here I would have put it on..

I can't imagine any legitimate employer being "repelled" by a candidate's military service. I guess it depends on who you interview with, but in almost 20 years since my discharge EVERY potential employer has been interested and impressed with my military experiences (and I was a VERY mediocre sailor).

I agree with bigvan! I can't imagine any potential employer being repelled by prier Military Service. If,

and I mean IF any even looked like they were on shaky ground in this sense, I wouldn't consider THEM! Period!

Your Service is something to be proud of, not hidden or left out of a resume. Include it and pump your chest

out at an interview. If he looks shaky... It's that individual! Not that company! I guarantee any interviewer

that gives you a hinkie feeling went to the University of Berkeley! Screw Them!

if you join the Legion you can also join the Legion Riders, a group of Legionares who also ride motorcycles. it's not a biker's club, but an extention of the Legion itself and can be alot of fun.
i have been a member for over 20 years, 15 or so continuous and have enjoyed every minute of it.
btw, even if you don't join, your local Post can help ypou out with work search and help you network with other vets to find work...

Like I said, that was just my experience, but that was years ago.

Haha. I was a legitimate pain in my superiors' butts. I never got an A-15 or anything like that but I know I was responsible for some ulcer medication.
I was a little like PFC Tucker in Red vs. Blue.

I never heard of such a thing.. (I have hired and seen a lot of folks hired and this has never crossed my mind, I'm U.S. Army, RVN '69->71)
You could spend $20 on a lot worse then joining the Legion. If you ever want to file a VA claim they will have folks who will help you out.
