A good read indeed Russ. Thank you for the refresher course.
I’m looking forward to seeing how much cooler a churchwarden smokes than my other pipes; and if it will have any affect on my smoking cadence.
If it smokes cooler I might want to puff more… Oh no! :puffy:

Another great article. Think I'm gonna try drying my tobacco a little more just to see how much of a difference it makes. I don't have an issue with tongue bite, I'm a slow smoker anyway.

I do not have a terrible problem with tongue bit, but after reading this article I am going to try to let me pipes rest a day longer between smokes. Not easy to do because I only have nine pipes; I guess it is time to go on a spending spree.

Great article, thanks Kevin. If anyone is staying away from virginia flakes and vapers because of tongue bite, do your self a favor and try to emulate what Russ said in his article. There is a whole world full of great blends that with the right amount of patience and practice can be yours to enjoy. When I first began I too stuck to English blends because of the tongue bite issue, once I learned the ins and outs of flakes, I smoke them almost exclusively and do not smoke English blends anymore. Maybe I should crack a tin of Penzance and give it another shot, but then I would be competing with Hobie to corner the market on the stuff. :nana:

Well, now I know there's a name for how I load my pipe: Puff N Stuff. "Back in the day", when I started smoking, that's how everyone did it. Guess we were just too ignorant to think about a better way; just stuff it in, and light up. Kinda forced you to learn as you went... May have to try one of the other methods, just to see if there's a difference.
Thanks for the article.

Always good to be reminded of the "do's and do not's" good read. Thanks.

very good article indeed

Should almost be a sticky at the top. Huge difference between "burn" and "bite", which are quite often mixed.

Not only a great article for newcomers, I enjoyed reading it to "remind" of the bad habits I occasionally revert back to.

cleanbaccy makes a great point about chemistry. There are certain tobaccos that once the smoke hits my tongue it feels like acid is burning it. I know it is a chemical reaction because it only happens with certain Virginias and I smoke 95 percent virginia and vaper flakes. If you feel that sensation I don't care how dry, or how well you pack, or how slow you smoke, it ain't gonna work.

Great article!

My biggest problem is still smoking too fast. I don't think a 25yr cigg habit helped. It takes so much effort for me to slow down that I only smoke my Va/Pers when I know I can concentrate. The effort is SO worth it, when I slow smoke a bowl Of OGS it is like a little slice of heaven opened up in my music room and everything becomes right with the world.
