Hello everybody! Me being a college student, I barely have two nickels to rub together at times. So what would be a GOOD pipe tobacco that would be a pleasure to smoke and rather easy on the wallet? I know that OVC blends are rather inexpensive and that buying in bulk could save some money as well, but was wondering what the rest of you all had in mind......

Personally I'm not a fan of OTC blends. Based on your preferences, I think bulk purchases from one of the site sponsors like smokingpipes.com would do the trick.

The two questions you need to answer are: How many bowls do you smoke per week? and What kind of tobaccos do you like?
The problem with ordering online is that with shipping costs, if you don't place a large order, you wind up spending more than you should for tobacco. If you have access to a good B&M, I would suggest checking out their bulk selection. For five bucks, you can get a ounce and a half of good tobacco. That can last a couple of weeks if you only smoke a bowl a day. However, if you do not have access to a B&M, you can always go for the drugstore blends. While I must say that I don't like most of these, there are a couple that I would be willing to smoke. Captain Black is by far the best, but it is a heavy aromatic.

On a budget bulk is the best way to go. On most of the sponsor sites their bulk blends run from $20-$40 for a pound depending on the site and blend and it goes down to about $5 for 2oz. Also I will say it is good to save up and do one huge bulk order, because a lot of sites these days do free shipping after a certain dollar amount. I know the site sponsor smokingpipes.com does free shipping after $95, not sure about the others though.

Ok....Thanks everybody!

I smoke about 1 - 1 1/2 bowls per day....My favorite blends are prlly Virginia, Virginia/Perique Blends. I also enjoy burley blends as well....

My favorite OTC Blend is Prince Albert. I can smoke Sir Walter Raleigh as well, but it reminds me of cigarettes too much.....So SWR is smoked when I am desperate for a smoke....

There is a Tobacconist about 1 hour away from me.....That is the closest one and I still do not get to visit it as much as I would like.....So I normally order online....

Affordable is buying in bulk, pretty much without fail the more you buy, the better deal you get.
The pattern of price on P&C is pretty typically the same for most bulk tobaccos: the price per ounce goes down to about 33% or so, if you buy 8 ounces instead of 1 or 2.
Which is why I asked around a lot before I spent any significant amount of cash on tobacco.

One thing you can do if you know any other pipe smokers near you is to split an order to get the free shipping then you are only spending 50 or so instead of 100 really the best way to go is bulk tobacco

If you get a chance to attend a pipe show, take it. There are often deals there. Also there would not be shipping. I assume that there would be samples available for you to try before putting money down.
When I went the the Chicago Pipe Show last year, I had only cash on me. When I returned home, I showed my wife. "This is how much cash I have left over. Now look at what I bought." It was amazing!

Buying in bulk: yes and no. Find a good bulk by trying various samples. Buying online, definitely.
The reason why I'm advising against buying in bulk ( 8oz or more ), taking in account how much you smoke ( not very much by any standards ), you'd have to have some sort of storage for it with the right factors of temperature and humidity. Otherwise the baccy would dry up on you and would end up costing you more ( time, effort and waste ) to bring it back to life. I don't smoke a lot, maybe 4 bowls a day and not every day, and I've had stuff go dry on me.
Like herbinedave said, quality makes all the difference. I find the quality stuff to be more "filling", so to speak, hence I'd smoke less.
I stay away from OTC because the added chems make them all taste like various degrees of cigs which for years I tried to get away from and finally succeeded about a year ago ......

Try a pouch of OTC Half&Half. It was good enough for me for 19 years of exclusive blend smoking! That was 31 years ago. But, it is a blend that has stood the test of time. And, it's cheap (relatively speaking).

Howdy mate. Why don't you look up Pipes and Cigars, have a look at there H&H Sampler Pack. For $30.00, you can get 6, one ounch samples to try. It really is a great deal and a fine way to explore diff blends without paying out huge dollars and not liking what you get.

Bulk blends and mason type jars are a great way to go and you can always order small bulk samples from just about any of the sponsors here before you go crazy like many of us here and start ordering your favorites by the pound. If you go the jar route just be sure to keep the jars out of direct Sun light and relatively cool. I keep mine in our basement but that isn't necessary. Tobacco kept as suggested should be fine for several years. IMO Virginia, VaPer Blends can go from good to amazing after aging 6 months to 5 years in a jar.
There are many brands that are easily available, that offer quality bulk blends but based on your original question I'd recommend you start with Cornell & Diehl, McClelland, and Peter Stokkebye all offer some very good Virginia and VaPer blends.
Cheers... :puffy:

Affordable tobacco is non existant where I live. We pay $40-$50 for 50grams. I buy all my tobacco from 4noggins they have good service and shipping is much cheaper than pipesandcigars.com. They charge $20 for shipping and PAC charge $40+. I only ever order 3 tins of tobacco at a time otherwise customs taxes it $450 a kg. I am thankful for these online websites because they still allow me to enjoy the hobby without hurting the wallet too much.

a 50 gram tin is like $8 on average in America
Online yes. Off the shelf at a B&M anywhere from 12 to 25 depending on state baccy taxes and wheter they get it directly from the distributor.
@auspipe: find something you like and stock up on it, 3 tins at a time as you have been doing. Your selection is limited to what 4noggins has in stock, apparently, due to more affordable shipping to you, all other things being equal. All other things being equal as well, and WITHOUT GETTING INTO THE POLITICS OF IT ALL, JUST STATING THE FACTS, take into consideration the social protection in AU vs the lack thereof here in the States when comparing prices ( minimum wage vs minimum wage for example ) .....
Let the flame start :puffpipe:

Well Mr Hooker, free samples are very affordable. Look on the Sterling Tobacco web site, and Altadis pipe tobacco. They both send out free samples.
For me the only OTC tobaccos I like are Captain Black and Sugar Barrel. I have tried PA and SWR and well I less than loved them. Many people are fond of them but taste is subjective so you can only try them and see if you like them.
You can order sample quantities from "4 Noggins" of all the OTC brands and others in the bulk section. I say try a few samples and see which one you enjoy then order that in larger quantities. If you like Captain Black try the ever popular 1Q for more bang for your buck. I feel it is better quality for less money. Sugar Barrel is around $26 for a tub and only a few bucks for a 2 Oz. sample.
