I have never been disappointed with a Stanwell. Petersons can be so and so, usually smoke great after you fix them (remove inside-bowl stain and other fun things).

Man there are so many great pipes and pipe makers out there, it is impossible to answer. I started with a no-name English billiard pipe and abag of CBW. I now have 9 pipes, including two Missouri Meerschaum Cobs and an actual Meerschaum. I like all of them for different reasons. I personally like the adventure of buying estate pipes on ebay for cheap, cleaning them up and seeing what I got. If you just want to buy a good pipe without the gamble, I'd say you can't lose with a reputable brand in a style you like, the Petes, Savs, Kaywoodies etc. The Missouri Meerschaum corn cob is not to be underestimated in smokability and I think everyone should have at least one. Uncle Arthur has a great reputation for making pipes at a reasonable price and can even make an improved stem for a cob or cheaper pipe. There is a whole world of PAD to enjoy!

I just placed my order through pipesandcigars, I decided on "Savinelli Venezia Pipe - 622ks - Pot". Called the two local B&M and neither had any of the pipes I had been looking at, and seeing how they are each 30 mins away and in different directions, decided to just go for it. Worst case, I'm not a fan of it and put it on flea bay as an estate...
Also picked up:

two cobs, 1 filtered, 1 unfiltered

4 oz of scotty's butternut barley

2 oz of SPC plumb pudding

"a better one for the road" sampler

and the filter's for the two pipes to try them out
More than I was planning on spending of course, but it makes more sense to spend $35 more on baccy to save right $7 on shipping, right ?
Now I'll just be patiently waiting for the mailman... :puffy:
