Over the last year or so, I've noticed that on some mornings my palate and tongue would get irritated almost immediately upon smoking a pipe, and I would then suffer with cottonmouth for most of the rest of the day. Initially I thought it was technique, then the blend, then the coffee I was drinking, but changing things up didn't seem to reveal a smoking gun.

The only consistent factor that did seem to coincide with this malady was not eating breakfast before smoking. Well, I think I found the culprit now, it's the toothpaste my wife has been buying. It's some Crest sensitive blah blah blah (toothpaste has a gazillion descriptors now) product. It is possible that it is also reacting with the coffee to a lesser degree, as just drinking coffee in the morning can give me milder case of cottonmouth. The two combined together, without eating first (to neutralize the residual toothpaste), seems to consistently cause the issue.

What finally made the light bulb go on, was changing toothpaste to a baking soda type, and not getting cottonmouth. Was curious if others have had the same reaction to certain types of toothpaste.

I'm sorry you had problems with that issue. I hope you are doing better. I don't have any problems in that regard at the moment. I currently I use a toothpaste that works well for me, it leaves a good mouthfeel. I really have no idea which one is the best. I use Lacer. My wife uses the same brand, but with a different formula, Lacer Gingi, more specific for her.

I have found some toothpastes leave my mouth more sensitive. Not only smoking, but they react with some foods.
I started to look more into oral hygiene. It opened a rabbit hole. The main takeaway, without going into long winded explanations is, read the ingredient declaration. There are "some" ingredients listed that should not be swallowed. Some brands listed on their declarations that if swallowed contact poison control. You may find that also on some brands of mouth wash.

Ok so common sense ....... if it's bad for me to swallow, why am I putting it in my mouth?

I've switched to as "close" to a "natural" tooth paste as I can find locally, and since have had no issues with smoking or foods.

dose does make the poison. If you drink a whole fifth of whiskey in a minute you should call poison control too or something like that. Though some of the stuff seems questionable to me too.

Reactions to toothpaste and mouthwash do happen. They are rare but I was quite a few in my practice. But commoner is a new toothbrush making gums very sore(strangely!) I'm a retired dentist.

Half asleep one morning I mistook a tube of ‘deep heat’ for my tube of toothpaste. That certainly caused a reaction.
By the by, I once had an evil plot to paint a tube of Deep Heat so that it looked like Anusol, put it back in the Anusol box and then put that back on the local pharmacy shelf. Then, just listen intently for neighbourhood screaming in the morning.

A favourite pastime for the few of us Asian kids at boarding school was to find a gullible victim and convince them that Tiger Balm was Asia’s best aphrodisiac when applied to the genitals 😈

I use a baking-soda and sea salt-based anise flavored tooth powder and it is fantastic as an after-smoke dentrifice, especially after War Horse or Mixture 79 or Sutliff Count Pulaski.

A rinse with dry mouth mouthwash (ACT or Biotene) seals the deal.
