Well now, i must have had one over the yrs but just dont place it, as most of my pipes were brigs and meds. What exactly is the function of the adjustamatic feature on lets say a Grabow?

Here's mine: A Dr. Grabow Viscount, Ajustomatic, White Poker circa late 40's... I think.

Once upon a time long ago I was in a not so far away smoke shop.An elderly man walked in with a Grabow Adjustamatic. He told the fella working there that he wanted to return it because the stem turned too much. When he was told that it was supposed to do that he didn't believe it.He insisted on an exchange which he got.Sometimes I guess old folks want things to stay the same.

IIRC,the Ajustomatic feature was first used by the Van Roy Pipe Co. of New York in the 1940's. After HLT bought out Linkman(Grabow) they also bought out Van Roy. The Ajustomatic was used in several lines of Grabows and HLT including the Royalton. Hlt continued to make a Van Roy line but it lost the Ajusto and had a push stem.

As Portascat said it does keep you from overclocking the stem in that if you do overclock it all you have to do is keep turning clockwise until it come back to where it should be. Over time the Ajusto might stop working, from built up gunk etc. It's easy to get them working again in most cases.
Laurence, that Vicount poker is most likely from the 1970's. Viscount came out in the 50's but the painted pipes not until the 70's.
