Well I just joined this forum yesterday and already I am a bit overwhelmed with acronyms. Now having spent 26yrs in the military I know that acronyms serve a purpose but only if you know what the meaning of each one happens to be. So to that end, is there a place on this forum that has a legend for the most commonly used acronyms? If not, where can a true rookie like myself find out what the meaning of them happens to be?

Yes, as AR points out. And some of us ask that users of acronyms use them only after first spelling out what it means, but your mileage may vary.
YMMV, but IDK; I don't know.

YSHMOTP - You spent how much on that pipe? (Typically voiced by wives or significant others).
DYHET - Don't you have enough tobacco? (Ditto).
JOMP - Just one more pipe (The pipe-collector's maxim).
TNSTATMT - There's no such thing as too much tobacco (The TADICT's maxim).
TNSTATMP - There's no such thing as too many pipes (The PADICT's maxim).
TADICT - An individual afflicted with Tobacco Acquisition Disorder, a type of addiction.
PADICT - An individual afflicted with Pipe Acquisition Disorder, another type of addiction.

Thank you for dedicating your life to serve our country and it's citizens.
Acronyms: A real pain-in-the-ass for newer forum members, like me. I'm still trying to figure out what some guys are talking about. It took me a good month to figure out that blends of tobaccos all have their abbreviations, e.g....SWR = Sir Walter Raleigh, etc. I have many hobby interests and read through many forums, and each has it's own special jargon. Annoying when seasoned members assume everyone knows what they are posing about. So I had to learn the lingo to savvy.
For the guys that have been piping for years, it's no problem, but for noobs, like me....it's frustrating. It's like reading a cipher. However, it does get a little easier, especially if the actual spelled out name is used, and then abbreviated within the text of that posting/thread. At least then, you'll know the "secret" behind all the letter-words.
I feel your pain.

As a rebellion, I often spell out over-the-counter, aromatic, pipe acquisition disorder, and other acronyms, precisely to include newcomers. I lived with acronyms in school, the military, and a large research organization. My organization actually had a "plain language" award. I actually won one of those (they awarded quite a few, to be clear) with a children's book I wrote.

Thirty years as a working shooter and I've never heard of GAS. Looked it up and saw it was a term for photographers who think it's all about the equipment and not the eye or, what's between the ears. Akin to golfers who try to "buy" a decent game in the Pro Shop as opposed to putting in the toil and time.
The use of acronyms is so one can feel he belongs or, to makes others uncomfortable in their ignorance. Guys who know the magic handshake and the acronyms feels hip, part of the conversation. The poor new guy is stuck "looking it up" or worse, TNG (the new guy).
Sure, it saves key strokes, until you have to post an explanation or direct someone to "the list." I feel if someone has something important to say, it's incumbent upon them to post in easily understood terms and to consider the entire audience. Others feel differently, their time is too important for worry about everyone underwtanding what they are posting. Different strokes, I suppose.

I’m with you on the tobacco abbreviations. We all assume everyone knows every blend under the sun.
